Electrician Waurn Ponds: switchboards, lights and outdoor power
Our Waurn Ponds work so far has centred on two things, the switchboard and the lights:
- Switchboard work features in most of our jobs here, often together with new safety switch protection: a combined circuit breaker and safety switch on each circuit.
- Lighting is level with it: new fittings, switches and outdoor lights.
- Fault finding for circuits that had stopped working.
- Outdoor power, including a weatherproof power point on a post at a gate, fed by cable laid in conduit through a hand-dug trench.
- Also a ceiling fan, an appliance connection, an electrical inspection and work on the underground mains.

Waurn Ponds homes at a glance
Waurn Ponds is a residential suburb and university precinct about 9 km south-west of Geelong. Deakin University's Geelong campus has been here since 1977, and the residential suburb has grown south of the Princes Highway, flanked by the Geelong Ring Road.
At the 2021 Census it had 4,956 residents. Separate houses made up 97.6 per cent of homes, the average household was 3.0 people and the median age was 27. About a third of homes were owned outright (34.3 per cent) and about one in five was rented (21.1 per cent).
For wiring, that means family-sized houses with a lot running at once, and owners adding to what the house came with: more lighting, outdoor power and protection for new circuits. Older boards with safety switches on only some circuits can turn up too, and those are the ones we upgrade.

Switchboards and safety switches
Switchboard work often starts with something else: a new circuit that will not fit, a fault that keeps coming back, or a board with protection on some circuits but not others. Energy Safe Victoria lists old switchboards without a safety switch among the tell-tale signs that home wiring may be faulty.
Two things are worth knowing:
- A safety switch only protects the circuits connected to it. Adding a combined circuit breaker and safety switch to an unprotected circuit is non-prescribed work: no independent inspection, but you still get a Certificate of Electrical Safety.
- Replacing the main switchboard is prescribed work. It is inspected by an independent licensed electrical inspector before the power goes back on, and every final circuit on the new board must have safety switch protection.
Outdoor power at the gate: how it works and what it costs
Power away from the house, at a gate, a garden bed or a detached garage, means running cable underground. In Waurn Ponds we have done exactly that: a trench dug by hand, conduit laid in it, and a weatherproof power point mounted on a post at the end.
Digging by hand takes longer than a machine but keeps the damage to lawns and garden beds small. The price depends mostly on the length of the run and what the ground is like between the house and the outlet, and the switchboard has to have room for the circuit. Every outdoor power point we fit goes on a circuit with safety switch protection. For lights outside, see outdoor light installation.
Rental homes in Waurn Ponds
About one Waurn Ponds home in five was rented at the 2021 Census. Owners and property managers book us for electrical safety checks of the switchboard, wiring and fittings, with access arranged with the household and a written report of the results.
Where the check finds a board with safety switches on only some circuits, protection can usually be added to the power and lighting circuits. A board without circuit breakers may need a switchboard upgrade. Either way, we quote the work before doing it.

Services available in Waurn Ponds
Everything we do for homes across Geelong is available in Waurn Ponds: lighting and downlights, power points, smoke alarms, ceiling and exhaust fans, appliance connections, TV and data points, security cameras, EV chargers and electrical safety inspections. For a fault at night, our 24/7 emergency line is 1300 025 555.
How booking works
Ring 1300 025 555 and describe the job. For outdoor power, tell us where the power point needs to go and what lies between it and the house: lawn, paving or garden beds. We book a time, the electrician looks at the switchboard and the cable route, and you get the price before any digging or wiring starts. After the work is tested you receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety, due within 30 days for non-prescribed work such as power points and lights.
Nearby suburbs
Waurn Ponds borders Wandana Heights, Grovedale, Belmont and Ceres, with Highton and Mount Duneed close by. We cover all of them, and the rest of the region is on our residential electrician Geelong page.
Frequently asked questions
Do you do switchboard upgrades in Waurn Ponds?
Yes. Switchboard work is the most common job in our Waurn Ponds records, usually with safety switch protection added circuit by circuit. Replacing a main switchboard needs an independent inspection, which we arrange.
Can you put a power point at my front gate?
Yes. We have done this in Waurn Ponds: a trench, cable in conduit and a weatherproof power point on a post. We look at the distance and the ground before quoting.
Do I need an inspector for a new safety switch?
No. Installing a safety switch is non-prescribed work, so no independent inspection is needed. You still receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety, with your copy due within 30 days.
Is there a simple way to check my safety switches are working?
Yes. Energy Safe Victoria says to do it every three months: tell the household, press the test button on each safety switch, check the power goes off on that circuit, then reset it.
Why do my lights flicker or go dim?
Energy Safe Victoria's advice for flickering or dim lights, or power to only part of the house, is to keep away from the switchboard and anything metal, turn off the power points you can reach and call Powercor on 13 24 12. Then have a licensed electrician check the wiring.
What happens if a Waurn Ponds rental safety check finds a problem?
The report lists it with how urgent it is, and we quote the repair to the owner or property manager. Missing safety switches are usually fixed by adding protection to the power and lighting circuits.
Can new lighting be added during a switchboard upgrade?
Yes. Switchboards and lighting are the two most common jobs in our Waurn Ponds records, and doing them together means the new board can be laid out with room for the extra circuits.
Which suburbs near Waurn Ponds do you cover?
All of them: Wandana Heights, Highton, Grovedale, Belmont, Ceres and Mount Duneed, plus the rest of Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula, the Surf Coast and Golden Plains.
