Electrician North Geelong: this is where we are based
North Geelong is home base for CabledIN. It is a small suburb on the west side of Corio Bay, with 3,225 residents and 1,293 private dwellings at the 2021 Census, and it borders Bell Park, Norlane, Hamlyn Heights, Geelong West, Rippleside and Drumcondra.
The phone is answered around the clock. We also look after some local businesses, but most of our North Geelong work is in people's homes.

The jobs North Geelong homes book
- Power points. The most common request: new double power points, and replacements for worn or damaged ones. See power point installation.
- Lighting and switches. Older fittings replaced with LED downlights, and rows of light switches replaced with new switch plates.
- Smoke alarms. Hard-wired alarms replaced, ideally all at the same time so they share one replacement date.
- Safety switches. Protection added to a circuit that did not have it.
- Exhaust fans, appliances, data points and CCTV. Bathroom fans replaced, appliances connected, and data and camera cabling run.

Older estates and post-war homes
North Geelong was settled early: three subdivision estates had opened west of the railway line by 1864. Its strongest growth came later, from the 1950s to the early 1970s, and next door in Bell Park residential settlement also began in the 1950s.
Four in five occupied homes in North Geelong were separate houses at the 2021 Census (81.6 per cent), and most of the rest were semi-detached homes, terraces or townhouses (17.9 per cent).
What that means for the wiring:
- Houses from the post-war decades are now roughly 50 to 70 years old, and can still have parts of their original wiring or an older switchboard with few safety switches.
- Older homes are more likely to have fewer power points than a household needs today.
- Energy Safe Victoria recommends a wiring check for any house over 30 years old, and before moving into a home built before the 1980s.
An electrical safety inspection tests the switchboard and circuits and gives you a clear list of what needs doing.

Smoke alarms: which rule applies to your house
What Victorian law requires depends on when your home was built:
| When the home was built | What is required |
|---|---|
| Before 1 August 1997 | Smoke alarms complying with AS 3786. Battery-powered alarms are enough. |
| After 1 August 1997 | 240 V mains-powered alarms with a backup battery. |
| Built or substantially renovated after 1 May 2014, needing more than one alarm | The alarms must be interconnected, so they all sound together. |
Whatever the age of the house, every smoke alarm should be replaced every 10 years, and hard-wired alarms must be installed and replaced by a licensed electrician. The CFA says to test alarms monthly. See smoke alarm installation.
Rented homes in North Geelong
About four in ten North Geelong homes (40.6 per cent) were rented at the 2021 Census. For owners and property managers, an electrical safety check works like this:
- Booking and access: the owner or property manager books, and we arrange a time with the household.
- What is checked: all switchboards, wiring and fittings, by visual inspection and limited testing to the Australian Standard for periodic verification.
- What the report shows: the results and any repairs needed.
- Repairs: quoted first, and any repair that follows comes with its own Certificate of Electrical Safety. The certificate is not the safety check, and the check is not a certificate.
We can test the smoke alarms at the same visit.

Power points, lights and switches
The everyday North Geelong jobs are small ones: a cracked power point, a switch that sparks, a flickering light, or a room running on power boards.
Energy Safe Victoria lists old or broken switches and power points, flickering lights and sparks among the signs that home wiring may be faulty, so none of these should be ignored. They are also not DIY jobs: in Victoria, replacing a power point or a light fitting, even like for like, must be done by a licensed electrician.
Adding a power point starts at the switchboard: we confirm there is a spare space and that the outlet will be covered by safety switch (RCD) protection. Nothing is switched on until it has been tested.

Frequently asked questions
Are you a local electrician North Geelong residents can call 24/7?
Yes. CabledIN is based in North Geelong, and we take emergency call-outs 24/7 on 1300 025 555. If the whole street is dark, it is a network fault for Powercor on 13 24 12. For a fire or an injury, ring 000.
There is a tingle when I touch the kitchen tap. Who do I call?
Call Powercor on 13 24 12 straight away, and keep away from the tap and the area around it. After that, a licensed electrical contractor should find the cause.
Does an older North Geelong house need hard-wired smoke alarms?
Homes built before 1 August 1997 are only required to have battery-powered alarms. Homes built after that date must have mains-powered alarms with a backup battery, and homes built or substantially renovated after 1 May 2014 that need more than one alarm must have them interconnected. All alarms should be replaced every 10 years.
Where do smoke alarms have to go in a house?
The legal minimum is an alarm between each sleeping area and the rest of the house, and one on every storey. Fire services recommend more: an alarm in every bedroom, hallway and living area. Kitchens, bathrooms and laundries do not need one.
Can you check the smoke alarms during a North Geelong rental safety check?
Yes. We test each alarm and read its date during the same visit, and any alarm that needs replacing is quoted to the owner or property manager first.
A power point is cracked and loose. Is it safe to use?
Stop using it. Energy Safe Victoria lists broken power points among the warning signs of faulty wiring. Keep children away from it and have a licensed electrician replace it, because replacing a power point is not DIY work in Victoria.
Can you add a safety switch to just one circuit?
Yes, if the switchboard has room. A combined circuit breaker and safety switch can be fitted to a single circuit. It protects only that circuit, so the electrician will tell you which other circuits are still unprotected.
Do you take small jobs in North Geelong, like one light switch?
Yes. North Geelong is where we are based, and small jobs such as a single light switch, power point or smoke alarm are a normal part of our work here.
