What a security camera installation includes
We have completed more than 40 camera and security jobs across the region, most often in Highton, Armstrong Creek, Newtown, Leopold and Mount Duneed. Whatever the size of the system, the work is the same set of parts:
- Camera positions agreed with you. We walk the property and mark where each camera goes and what it needs to see.
- Cable to every camera. Data cable is run through the roof space, wall cavities or conduit so nothing is left hanging off the eaves.
- The recorder. It is placed somewhere out of sight with power and a network connection.
- Power where it is needed. If the recorder, a Wi-Fi camera or a floodlight camera needs a power point, we install it.
- Set-up and handover. Cameras are aimed and focused, recording is switched on, and the app is set up on your phone.

Wired or Wi-Fi cameras: which suits your home
Both types work. They suit different homes.
| Feature | Wired cameras with a recorder | Wi-Fi cameras |
|---|---|---|
| How they connect | One data cable per camera carries both power and video | Video travels over your home Wi-Fi; most still need power nearby |
| Where footage is kept | On a recorder inside the house | On a memory card or in the maker's cloud service |
| Best for | Four or more cameras, long driveways, sheds | One or two cameras close to the router |
| Watch out for | More cabling on the day | Weak Wi-Fi outside brick walls, and ongoing cloud fees from some makers |
If the Wi-Fi does not reach the spot you want to cover, a cabled camera or a new data point for a wireless access point usually fixes it for good.

Where cameras should go
A few well placed cameras do more than a lot of badly placed ones. On most Geelong homes we start with these positions:
- The front door and porch, at a height that captures faces, not the tops of heads.
- The driveway and garage, covering the cars and the roller door.
- The side gate or side path, the usual way into a back yard.
- The back door and alfresco.
- Sheds, workshops and caravans on larger blocks.
We aim each camera at your own property and can mask out areas you do not want recorded, such as a neighbour's windows. Cameras under the eaves stay drier and cleaner than cameras on an open wall. Where a spot is dark at night, a sensor light beside the camera gives a far clearer picture, and we can add outdoor and sensor lighting on the same visit.

Recording, storage and viewing on your phone
A wired system records to a hard drive in the recorder. How many days of footage it holds depends on the size of the drive, the number of cameras, the picture quality and whether the cameras record all the time or only when they see movement. Tell us how far back you want to be able to look and we will size the drive to suit.
Once the recorder is connected to your modem you can watch live and recorded footage from your phone, and get an alert when a camera picks up movement. We set up the app with you, show you how to find and save a clip, and leave you with the log-in details. They are your cameras and your footage.
How CCTV & security camera installation in Geelong works on the day
- Walk-through. We confirm camera positions, the recorder location and the cable routes with you before any hole is drilled.
- Cabling. Cable is run from the recorder to each camera position and tested.
- Mounting. Cameras are fixed, sealed where the cable enters the wall, and aimed.
- Power and connection. The recorder is powered and connected to your modem. Any new power point is electrical installation work, so it is tested and you receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety for it.
- Set-up. Recording, motion alerts and the phone app are configured.
- Handover. We show you how to use the system and clean up before we go.
Not sure what you need? Tell us what is happening and we will talk it through.
Repairs to existing camera systems
If a camera on an existing system has dropped out, the fault is often the cable or a connector, not the camera. We test the cabling to each camera with a network tester, find the break, and repair or replace the run. A recorder that has stopped saving footage is checked the same way, starting with its power and drive.
We also install and repair camera systems for small businesses: shop floors, counters, car parks and yards. See commercial lighting if the car park or yard also needs better light.
Other ways we help keep a home safe and secure
Cameras are one part of a safe home. The same team looks after the rest:
- Video doorbells and intercoms, so you can see and speak to whoever is at the door.
- Smoke alarm installation, hard-wired and interconnected.
- Surge protection at the switchboard, which helps protect recorders, modems and other electronics from power surges.
- Sensor and security lighting around entries and driveways.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to install security cameras?
A home system of a few cameras is usually fitted in one visit. Two-storey homes, long runs to sheds or gates and larger systems take longer, and we tell you what to expect when we quote.
Can you install cameras I have already bought?
Yes. We install customer-supplied systems as well as systems we recommend. Send us the model before the visit so we can check what cable and power it needs.
Do security cameras need Wi-Fi?
Wired cameras do not. They send video down their own cable to the recorder, and the recorder only needs your internet connection for viewing on your phone. Wi-Fi cameras rely on a strong signal at the camera.
Do I need an electrician for CCTV and security camera installation in Geelong?
Any 240 volt work, such as a new power point for the recorder or a hard-wired floodlight camera, has to be done by a licensed electrician. Using one team for the cabling and the power also means one visit and one point of contact.
Will the cables be hidden?
Wherever the building allows it. We run cable through the roof space and wall cavities, and use neat conduit only where there is no hidden path, such as on a brick wall or a shed.
Do the cameras work at night?
Most current cameras have night vision. A sensor light near the camera improves the picture a lot, especially for faces and number plates, and we can install one at the same time.
How many days of footage will my system keep?
That depends on the drive size, the number of cameras, the picture quality and whether they record all the time or only on movement. Tell us how far back you want to look and we size the storage to match.
Can you fix a camera that has stopped working?
Yes. We test the cable, connectors and power to the camera first, because that is where most faults are, then repair or replace what has failed.
Which areas do you install security cameras in?
Highton, Armstrong Creek and Mount Duneed are where we fit the most cameras. We also cover the rest of Geelong and its suburbs, the Bellarine Peninsula, the Surf Coast and Golden Plains.
