Electrician Jan Juc: the upgrades we are asked about
Two upgrades Jan Juc home owners ask us about:
- EV charger installation, with a weatherproof isolating switch beside the charger and the cable run in conduit.
- Safety switch upgrades, replacing old circuit breakers with RCBOs. An RCBO combines a circuit breaker and a safety switch (RCD), so each circuit has its own protection.
Around that, every home service we offer across Geelong is available in Jan Juc, from lighting and power points to smoke alarms, TV wall mounting and fault finding.
What homes in Jan Juc typically need
Jan Juc sits next to Torquay, across Spring Creek, in Surf Coast Shire. Victorian Places dates its growth as a coastal township to the mid-1960s. Housing estates have since spread until Jan Juc almost joins Torquay, so the houses range from the 1960s to recent builds.
At the 2021 Census Jan Juc had 4,151 residents. Nearly all occupied homes are separate houses (96.0 per cent), and the median age was 40. The ABS counted 22.1 per cent of private dwellings as unoccupied on Census night.
- Older houses can still have an early switchboard with fuses and few or no safety switches. Energy Safe Victoria says a house more than 30 years old should have its wiring checked.
- Newer houses often need more than they were built with: extra power points, outdoor lighting, a TV on the wall and a car charger.

EV chargers in Jan Juc: what the job involves
A wall charger draws a large load for hours at a time, so the first question is whether the house can supply it:
- The switchboard. We give the charger its own protection on the board, so the board needs room for it. An old fuse board or a full board usually means a switchboard upgrade first.
- The supply. Powercor lists EV chargers among the common reasons to upgrade a supply. A change to capacity or phases is an alteration request that only a registered electrical contractor can lodge, and a high-capacity charger may need a network upgrade.
- The position. Where the car parks, which side its charge port is on, and the cable route from the board.
Like all electrical installation work, a charger comes with a Certificate of Electrical Safety. See EV charger installation for the options, and our guide on whether a normal electrician can install an EV charger.

Safety switches and RCBOs
A safety switch (RCD) cuts the power within 0.03 of a second when it detects electricity leaking from a circuit. It protects people. Circuit breakers and fuses protect the wiring, and they are not safety switches.
An RCBO does both jobs for one circuit. With an RCBO on each circuit, a fault trips only that circuit, instead of one safety switch cutting several circuits at once. Installing or replacing safety switches and circuit breakers is not independently inspected, and your certificate is due within 30 days.
Energy Safe Victoria says to test safety switches every three months. If one keeps tripping, see why a safety switch keeps tripping, and safety switch installation for the upgrade itself.
Outdoor power and lights
Outdoor fittings should be rated for outdoor use and sealed against moisture. Water getting into an outdoor light, power point or cable is a common reason a safety switch trips after rain. If one trips and will not reset, leave it off and have the fitting checked.
Outdoor work we offer includes weatherproof power points for the garden or a shed, sensor lights over the driveway and side path, and LED lighting for a deck. See outdoor light installation.

Frequently asked questions
Is there an electrician Jan Juc households can call at night?
Yes. CabledIN takes 24/7 emergency call-outs in Jan Juc and across the Surf Coast on 1300 025 555. If the whole street is out, call Powercor on 13 24 12. If anyone is in danger, call 000.
Is Jan Juc part of Torquay?
No. Jan Juc is its own suburb, next to Torquay across Spring Creek. The two share the 3228 postcode and Surf Coast Shire, and we cover both.
Can you install an EV charger at my Jan Juc house?
Yes. We check the switchboard and supply, run the circuit, mount the charger and its isolating switch, then test and set it up. You receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety.
Will I need a switchboard upgrade before an EV charger goes in?
Sometimes. If the board is full, or still has fuses, it usually needs upgrading first so the charger can have its own protection. We check this on the site visit, before you commit.
Does an EV charger need a bigger power supply?
Not always. Where it does, a registered electrical contractor lodges the request with Powercor. Powercor charges for that work separately from the electrician's quote.
What is an RCBO?
A circuit breaker and a safety switch in one unit, protecting a single circuit. With one on each circuit, a fault cuts power to that circuit only, not half the house.
Why does my safety switch trip after rain?
Often because water has got into an outdoor light, power point or cable, causing a leak the safety switch detects. If it will not reset, leave it off and have an electrician find the wet fitting.
Can you mount a TV on the wall in Jan Juc?
Yes. The bracket is fixed to the studs or brick, a power point goes behind the screen and the cables run inside the wall, so nothing hangs down.
Do I get paperwork for a new power point or light?
Yes. A Certificate of Electrical Safety must be provided for all electrical installation work in Victoria, whatever the size of the job. For lights and power points your copy is due within 30 days.
Can you run power to a shed or garage in Jan Juc?
Yes. We check the switchboard has room for the circuit, run the cable, and fit weatherproof outlets where they are exposed. The work comes with a certificate.
