Electrician Manifold Heights: lighting comes first
Lighting is the most common job in our Manifold Heights records, and outdoor lighting comes second. The full list:
- Downlights. Old fittings replaced with LED downlights, or LED lamps fitted to existing fittings.
- Outdoor lighting. Low-voltage garden and path lights, wall lights that shine up and down, and security spotlights with a motion sensor.
- EV chargers and three-phase power. Home chargers, and supply changes lodged with Powercor.
- Switchboard upgrades and safety switches. New boards, and safety switch (RCD) protection added to circuits that had none.
- Power points and faults. New outlets and fault finding.
- Smoke alarms, including smoke alarm checks for rented homes.

Homes built from the 1920s onward
Manifold Heights came under residential development in the 1920s. The name comes from the Manifold family, whose vineyards once covered part of the area.
Of the occupied homes in Manifold Heights at the 2021 Census, three in four (74.6 per cent) were separate houses. The rest were semi-detached homes, terraces and townhouses (13.8 per cent) or flats (11.9 per cent), so there is a fair share of townhouses and units among the older houses.
The oldest houses here are close to a century old. Homes of that age can have:
- An older switchboard with rewireable fuses and few safety switches.
- Light fittings and switches added to over many years.
- Older low-voltage downlights that are due for replacement.
If the wiring has not been looked at in a long time, Energy Safe Victoria's guidance is clear: a house over 30 years old should be checked by a licensed electrician.
Talk to a licensed Geelong electrician (REC 30925).
Replacing old downlights with LED
Older 12-volt downlights run from a transformer above the ceiling. There are two ways to update them:
- New LED fittings. The old fitting and transformer come out and an LED downlight with its own driver goes in. Where the new fitting suits the existing hole, there is little or no patching.
- LED lamps in the existing fittings. Quicker, but only suitable if the fittings and transformers are in good condition and work with LED.
The electrician checks the fittings and wiring and recommends one or the other. Replacing a light fitting is fixed wiring, so in Victoria it has to be done by a licensed electrician. See LED downlight installation for more.

Garden, path and security lighting
Outdoor lighting work in Manifold Heights falls into three kinds:
- Garden and path lights. Low-voltage spike lights along a path or garden bed, fed from a transformer that the electrician wires in.
- Wall lights. Up-and-down lights on the front or side of the house, made for outdoor use.
- Security lights. Twin spotlights with a motion sensor over a driveway, a side path or the back door.
Where cable runs outside it goes in conduit, and fittings are chosen for the weather. See outdoor light installation.
EV chargers and three-phase power
EV chargers come up in our Manifold Heights work too, and some homes need a supply change first. How it works:
- We check the switchboard and the supply. The charger needs its own circuit and protection, and the board needs room for it.
- If the supply has to change, for example to three-phase, we lodge the alteration request with Powercor. Only a Registered Electrical Contractor can lodge one.
- Powercor charges its own fee, paid to Powercor and separate from our quote, and says most alterations take 3 to 8 weeks.
- We install and test the charger, and you receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety.
Work on the consumer mains is prescribed work, so where a supply change involves the mains, an independent licensed electrical inspector checks it as well. See EV charger installation.

Smoke alarms and rented homes
About three in ten Manifold Heights homes were rented at the 2021 Census (31.7 per cent). Owners and property managers book us to look after the smoke alarms in those homes:
- Each alarm tested to the manufacturer's instructions and its position checked.
- The date on each alarm read, so expired alarms are found.
- A written record left for the owner or property manager.
- Faulty or expired alarms quoted for replacement before any work is done.
For every home, rented or not, each smoke alarm should be replaced every 10 years, and only a licensed electrician may install or replace a hard-wired alarm. See smoke alarm installation.
Booking: what to tell us
Ring 1300 025 555 or use the contact form. For lighting, tell us how many fittings and whether there is access to the roof space. For outdoor lights, say roughly where they go. For an EV charger, tell us the charger model if you have chosen one and where the car parks.
We book a time, look at the job and give you a quote before work starts. After the work is tested you receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety: for lights and power points your copy is due within 30 days, and for inspected work such as switchboards and mains, shortly after the inspection.

Frequently asked questions
Will you come out to Manifold Heights to replace a few downlights?
Yes. Lighting is the most common job we do in Manifold Heights, and a handful of downlights is a normal booking. Ring 1300 025 555 and tell us how many fittings there are.
Can I keep the old downlight holes when I switch to LED?
Often, yes. Many LED downlights are made to suit common hole sizes, so they drop into the existing cut-out. If the new fitting needs a different size, the electrician tells you before starting.
Can outdoor lights run on a sensor or a timer?
Yes. Security spotlights usually have a motion sensor built in, and garden lights can be run from a switch inside the house or on a timer.
Who applies to Powercor for a three-phase upgrade?
Your electrician does. Only a Registered Electrical Contractor can lodge an alteration request with Powercor. Powercor's charges are paid to Powercor, separate from the electrician's quote, and it says most of these works take 3 to 8 weeks.
Should I have the wiring checked in an older Manifold Heights house?
Yes, if it has not had a check in years. Energy Safe Victoria puts the line at 30 years: any house older than that should be looked at by a licensed electrician. The inspection shows what is sound, what needs repair and what needs replacing.
My smoke alarms still beep when tested. Do they need replacing?
If they are more than 10 years old, yes. Every smoke alarm, hard-wired or battery, should be replaced every 10 years, even if it still works. The date is usually printed on the alarm. Hard-wired alarms must be replaced by a licensed electrician.
Can you check the smoke alarms in a Manifold Heights rental?
Yes. We test each alarm, read its date and leave a written record for the owner or property manager. An electrical safety check of the switchboard, wiring and fittings can be booked for the same visit.
Will new LED downlights work with my dimmer?
Not every LED fitting suits every dimmer, and a mismatch can cause flicker or humming. The electrician checks the dimmer and either matches the fittings to it or replaces it with one made for LED.
Can you add an outdoor power point while you are fitting the lights?
Yes. Outdoor power points and lights are often done in the same visit. The switchboard needs a free space for the new circuit, which we confirm first, and exposed cable runs in conduit.
