Why Leopold homes are reaching the age where wiring needs attention
Leopold was rural until the 1960s. Its population doubled between 1961 and 1971, then doubled again by 1981, so a large share of its houses date from the 1970s and 1980s. More than nine in ten dwellings are separate houses (2021 Census).
Those first houses are now 40 to 50 years old. Energy Safe Victoria says any house more than 30 years old should have its wiring checked by a licensed electrician. In practice that means three things in Leopold:
- Original switchboards with few circuits and no safety switch (RCD), or only one.
- Smoke alarms well past their ten-year life.
- Too few power points for the way the house is used now.

Smoke alarms in Leopold: the ten-year replacement rule
Nearly one in three of our Leopold jobs involves smoke alarms. The reason is age. Every smoke alarm, hard-wired or not, should be replaced every 10 years, so a house built in the late 1990s should now be on its third set.
What the law requires depends on when the house was built:
- Built before 1 August 1997: a working alarm that meets the Australian Standard. It does not have to be wired in.
- Built after that date: alarms powered from the mains, with a backup battery.
- Built or substantially renovated after 1 May 2014: where more than one alarm is needed, they must be interconnected, so one alarm sets off the others.
Hard-wired alarms must be installed and replaced by a licensed electrician. While you are checking the alarms, test the safety switches as well: Energy Safe Victoria says to press the test button on each one every three months, and to call a licensed electrician straight away if the power stays on. Power points, outdoor outlets and TV points
Houses from the 1970s and 1980s were wired for far fewer appliances than a household owns now. The most common request is simple: more double power points where the power boards and extension leads are.
We also fit heavier-duty outlets in Leopold. A 15 amp or larger outlet takes equipment that a standard power point is not rated for. Outdoors we fit weatherproof switched outlets, in conduit where the cable is exposed.
