Electrician Anglesea: the work in our records
Our Anglesea job records are mostly about switchboards and protection:
- Switchboards and safety switches: a replacement switchboard enclosure, and combined circuit breaker and safety switch units (RCBOs).
- Lighting, including old floodlights replaced with twin LED floodlights.
- Fault finding, including emergency work.
- Power points, smoke alarms, appliance connections and electrical inspections.
We also install security cameras for keeping an eye on the house.

What homes in Anglesea typically need
Anglesea faces Bass Strait at the start of the Great Ocean Road, on the Anglesea River, in Surf Coast Shire. Houses have been built here for more than a century: the land was subdivided in 1884, and reticulated electricity arrived before the Second World War.
At the 2021 Census Anglesea had 3,208 residents. Most occupied homes are separate houses (92.9 per cent), more than half are owned outright, and the median age was 54. The ABS counted 55.5 per cent of private dwellings as unoccupied on Census night.
That shapes the electrical work:
- Older switchboards in older houses, which can have fuses and few safety switches. Energy Safe Victoria lists old switchboards without a safety switch among the warning signs of faulty wiring.
- Security and lighting for a house that is not always lived in.
- Faults found on arrival, when a circuit has tripped while nobody was home.
Talk to a licensed Geelong electrician (REC 30925).
Security cameras and floodlights for a house you are away from
If your Anglesea house is empty for weeks at a time, two things help: seeing it from wherever you are, and lighting that leaves no dark corners.
- Security cameras are cabled to a recorder. Once it is connected to your modem, you can watch live and recorded footage on your phone.
- LED floodlights replace older floodlights over driveways, side paths and back doors. Sensor lights come on when someone approaches; lights without a sensor can run on a timer or a dusk-to-dawn switch.
- Outdoor fittings should be rated for outdoor use and sealed against the weather.
See outdoor light installation for fittings and placement.
Switchboard upgrades in Anglesea: process and price
When an old board has fuses or a single safety switch, there are two options. Where the board already has circuit breakers, RCBOs can often give each circuit its own safety switch protection. An older fuse board may need replacing:
- A new main switchboard is prescribed work, inspected by an independent licensed electrical inspector we arrange.
- The power cannot go back on to the new board until it has been inspected.
- Every final circuit on the new board must have safety switch protection.
- Older panels can contain asbestos, mostly boards installed before 1990. Drilling or cutting them can release fibres.
The price depends on how many circuits the board carries, the condition of the wiring when it is tested, and whether anything has to move. We quote after seeing it. See switchboard upgrades.
Trees, bush and your power supply
Anglesea's bush setting comes with a long fire history: Victorian Places records 14 houses lost in 1966 and 142 homes destroyed in the Ash Wednesday fires of 1983. Two electrical points are worth knowing in a town with this much bush:
- Trees near the service line. Powercor lists vegetation on private property near the service line among its common defects. If Powercor issues a defect notice, fixing it is the owner's responsibility, and electrical repairs are done by a registered electrical contractor, who sends Powercor the certificate.
- A private power pole. If your property has its own pole and line, the owner is responsible for its condition and for keeping vegetation clear of it, and only a registered electrical contractor may work on it.
Our guide on what a Powercor defect notice means explains the process.

Fault finding and after-hours call-outs
Before you call, a few safe checks:
- Ask a neighbour. If the street is out, call Powercor on 13 24 12.
- If only your house is out, check the switchboard. Unplug the appliances on a tripped circuit and reset the safety switch.
- If it trips again with nothing plugged in, or will not reset, leave it off and call a licensed electrician.
A fault that comes and goes takes longer to trace than one that is constant. We find the cause, then quote the repair. See electrical fault finding and repairs, or our 24/7 emergency electrician page if something is unsafe. If anyone is in danger, call 000.

Frequently asked questions
Is there an emergency electrician Anglesea residents can call?
Yes. CabledIN takes 24/7 emergency call-outs in Anglesea and along the Surf Coast, and the phone is answered around the clock on 1300 025 555. For fallen powerlines call Powercor on 13 24 12, and 000 if anyone is in danger.
Can I watch my Anglesea house on my phone while I am away?
Yes. A wired camera system records to a recorder in the house. Once the recorder is connected to your modem you can watch live and recorded footage on your phone.
Can you replace old floodlights with LED?
Yes. Old floodlights are swapped for LED floodlights rated for outdoor use, with or without a sensor. Lights without a sensor can run on a switch, timer or dusk-to-dawn control.
Is Anglesea in the City of Greater Geelong?
No. Anglesea is in Surf Coast Shire, postcode 3230. The Victorian electrical rules and certificates are the same as in Geelong, and we cover both.
Powercor sent me a defect notice. What now?
Fixing the defect is the owner's responsibility, by the date on the notice. A registered electrical contractor does the electrical repair and sends Powercor the certificate, and Powercor reconnects free if the supply was cut.
Who looks after a power pole on my own property?
If the pole and line are private, the owner is responsible for their condition and for keeping vegetation clear, and only a registered electrical contractor may work on them. Powercor inspects private lines every three years.
Can you find a fault that keeps tripping my power?
Yes. Unplug the appliances on the circuit and reset the safety switch. If it still trips, or trips with nothing plugged in, we trace the fault, then quote the repair before doing it.
Do I need a new switchboard or just new safety switches?
If the board already has circuit breakers, adding safety switch protection is often enough. An older fuse board may need replacing, and then every final circuit needs safety switch protection.
How often should smoke alarms be tested and replaced?
CFA advises testing every month and cleaning every year. Every alarm, hard-wired or battery, should be replaced every 10 years, and hard-wired alarms must be replaced by a licensed electrician.
Can you inspect an Anglesea house before I buy or rent it out?
Yes. An inspection checks the switchboard, wiring and fittings, with testing, and you get a written report of what needs repair. Landlords and property managers book these checks with us too.
