Power point services we carry out
- New and extra power points. Kitchens, home offices, bedrooms, garages and sheds.
- Single to double. Swapping a single outlet for a double is the upgrade we are asked for most.
- Replacement. Cracked, loose, scorched or dead outlets replaced with new ones.
- Power points with USB charging. Useful beside beds, desks and kitchen benches.
- Outdoor power points. Weatherproof single and twin outlets for decks, gardens, sheds and outdoor kitchens.
- 15 amp and larger outlets. For appliances and equipment that need more than a standard 10 amp point, on their own circuit.
- Relocations. Moving outlets during a renovation, or lifting one behind a wall-mounted television.
- Dedicated circuits. A new circuit from the switchboard for a heavy appliance.

Signs a power point needs replacing
Energy Safe Victoria lists old or broken switches and power points, and sparks from power points, among the signs that home wiring may be faulty. Have a power point looked at if:
- it is warm, discoloured or has scorch marks
- it buzzes, crackles or sparks when you plug something in
- plugs sit loose or fall out
- the plate is cracked or the switch no longer clicks
- it works on and off, or not at all
- the safety switch trips when you use it
Stop using a power point that is hot, sparking or scorched, and switch it off at the wall if it is safe to do so. A faulty power point is one of the things that can make a safety switch trip. Our guide covers the others: why does my safety switch keep tripping?

Talk to a licensed Geelong electrician (REC 30925).
Where power points can and cannot go
An electrician can put a power point in most places you would want one, but a few positions are ruled out or need more care.
- Near a cooktop. Energy Safe Victoria states that no switch or socket may be within 150 mm of the edge of a cooking surface.
- Bathrooms and laundries. Outlets near water need more care about where they sit. We tell you what suits your room before any cable is run.
- Outdoors. We fit weatherproof outlets made for outdoor use, not indoor power points under a cover.
- Brick and double-brick walls. A flush outlet is not always practical. A neat surface-mounted outlet can be the better choice.
Tell us what you plan to plug in. A phone charger and a heater put very different loads on a circuit.
How power point installation works
- We look at the job. Where you want the outlets, where the nearest suitable circuit is, and how the cable can get there through the roof space, under the floor or inside the wall.
- We check the circuit and the board. Can the circuit take the extra load, and is it protected by a safety switch (RCD)?
- Written quote. You know the cost before we start.
- Power off, cable run, outlet fitted. We switch off the circuit, run the cable, cut in the outlet and connect it.
- Testing. The new outlet is tested, including polarity, earthing and safety switch operation.
- Certificate. You receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety. For this type of work your copy is due within 30 days.
We clean up before we leave.

Existing circuit or new circuit?
Most extra power points can be added to an existing power circuit. A new circuit is the right answer when the existing one is already loaded, or when the outlet is for something that draws a lot of power.
The warning signs of an overloaded circuit are double adaptors and power boards in every room, and a circuit breaker that trips when a few appliances run together. More outlets on that same circuit will not help. A new circuit will.
A new circuit needs a spare space in the switchboard. If yours is full, or still has ceramic fuses, we will talk to you about a switchboard upgrade. While we are at the board, it is also the easiest time to add surge protection for the equipment you are about to plug in.
Not sure what you need? Tell us what is happening and we will talk it through.
The Victorian rules for power point work
- No DIY, even like for like. Doing your own electrical work is illegal in Victoria. That includes replacing a power point with an identical one.
- A licensed electrician working for a registered contractor. In Victoria an electrician must work for a registered electrical contractor to do work for a customer. Ours is REC 30925, and you can check any contractor on Energy Safe Victoria's public register.
- A certificate every time. A Certificate of Electrical Safety must be provided for all electrical installation work, whatever the size of the job.
- No independent inspection needed. Power points are non-prescribed work, so an inspector does not need to attend.
Power point jobs around Geelong
Power points are the work we do most. Our job records hold more than 220 power point jobs, with the most in Lara, Bannockburn, Hamlyn Heights, Leopold, Geelong West, Corio, Bell Park and Belmont. The double power point is the single most common part we fit, and weatherproof outdoor outlets are regular work too.
Many of these jobs are part of something bigger: a kitchen or bathroom renovation, a wall-mounted television, a home office, or an older home that was built with one outlet per room. Where a house needs outlets throughout and the wiring is old, we will tell you honestly whether house wiring or rewiring is the better path.
More power and electrical work from the same team
Power points are one part of the power side of your home. The same electricians handle the switchboard, safety switches, circuit breakers, wiring, lighting, hot water, EV chargers and electrical safety inspections, so one visit can cover several jobs. The links at the bottom of this page go to each service.

Frequently asked questions
Can I install or replace a power point myself?
No. DIY electrical work is illegal in Victoria, even swapping a power point for an identical one. It must be done by a licensed electrician.
How long does power point installation in Geelong take?
Replacing an existing outlet is a short job. A new outlet takes longer, depending on how far the cable has to run and how easy the roof space or wall is to get into.
Can an electrician install a power point anywhere?
Almost, but not everywhere. No socket may be within 150 mm of the edge of a cooking surface, and outlets near water in bathrooms and laundries need extra care.
Can a single power point be changed to a double?
Yes, in most cases. It is one of our most common jobs. We check the circuit can take the extra load first.
Can you install power points with USB ports?
Yes. They replace a standard outlet and suit bedsides, desks and kitchen benches.
Can I have a power point installed outside?
Yes. We fit weatherproof outlets made for outdoor use on decks, in gardens and in sheds, on a circuit protected by a safety switch.
Can you add a power point behind a fridge or in the garage?
Yes. Extra power points in kitchens, garages and sheds are everyday jobs. We check whether the existing circuit can take the extra load or whether the new outlets need a circuit of their own.
Can you run a power point from a light switch?
It is not the way we would do it. Lighting circuits are designed for lighting loads, so a new power point should come from a power circuit or a new circuit.
How many power points can go on one circuit?
There is no single number that suits every home. It depends on what will be plugged in and the rating of the cable and circuit breaker. We work that out before adding outlets.
What size cable is used for power points?
The electrician sizes the cable to suit the circuit breaker, the length of the run and the load. It is part of the design of the circuit, and not something to choose off the shelf.
Why has my power point stopped working?
Check whether a safety switch or circuit breaker has tripped at the switchboard. If it has not, or the outlet is warm, scorched or loose, stop using it and call a licensed electrician.
Do I get a certificate for a new power point?
Yes. A Certificate of Electrical Safety must be provided for all electrical installation work in Victoria, including a single power point.
