Switchboards, safety switches, power points and outdoor power for Little River homes, by CabledIN

CabledIN is a licensed electrician Little River households can call for switchboards, safety switches, power points, outdoor power, smoke alarms and EV chargers, with 24/7 emergency call-outs. We are a Registered Electrical Contractor (REC 30925) with more than 20 years' experience.

A power point or a light is usually one visit. A switchboard upgrade takes longer and is independently inspected. On a larger block, the distance from the switchboard to the job also affects the quote, which we give after seeing it.

What homes in Little River typically need

Little River is a rural township on the railway to Geelong, set in grazing and dairying land, and the council describes it as untouched by suburban sprawl. At the 2021 Census it had 1,353 people and 480 private dwellings. Nearly all are separate houses (98.5 per cent), households average 3.0 people, and many homes sit on larger blocks. That shapes the work:

  • A switchboard that keeps up. A full household runs a lot at once. Circuits that trip when the oven, kettle and heater are all on can mean the board has too few circuits.
  • Power where it is needed, inside and out, so nothing runs off an extension lead.
  • Long cable runs to outdoor areas far from the board, with the cable sized for the distance.
  • Safety switch protection on circuits that do not have it.

Switchboards and safety switches

Energy Safe Victoria lists old switchboards, particularly those without a safety switch, among the warning signs of faulty wiring, and advises a wiring check for any house over 30 years old. A safety switch (RCD) only protects the circuits it is connected to.

  • If the board has circuit breakers and spare room, safety switch protection can usually be added circuit by circuit. See safety switch installation.
  • An older fuse board may need replacing. Then every final circuit must have safety switch protection, and the new board stays off until an independent inspector has checked it.
  • Some older boards sit on panels that contain asbestos. Never drill or cut one.

Power points, lighting and outdoor power

We add double power points inside, including in garages and laundries, and fit lights to suit each room. Outside, we fit weatherproof switched power points and outdoor lights, with exposed cable run in conduit. If you want power in a shed or garage away from the house, three things set the job: room on the switchboard for a new circuit, the length of the run, and the route the cable takes. See power point installation.

We also fit ceiling and exhaust fans, connect ovens and cooktops, mount TVs and run data cabling.

Outages, storms and emergencies

We take emergency call-outs 24/7 in Little River. When the power goes, these checks are safe:

  1. Ask a neighbour or check Powercor's live outage map. If the area is out, call Powercor, the distributor for western Victoria, on 13 24 12.
  2. If only your home is out, unplug what is on the tripped circuit and reset the safety switch once. If it will not reset, call us.
  3. Treat a fallen power line as live. Stay at least 10 metres away, call 13 24 12, and call 000 if anyone is in danger.
  4. Never connect a generator to the house wiring.

Smoke alarms and EV chargers

Smoke alarms. Homes built after 1 August 1997 must have 240 V mains-powered alarms with a backup battery. Older homes need only battery alarms by law, but every alarm should be replaced after 10 years. See smoke alarm installation.

EV chargers. A home charger depends on room on the switchboard, the supply, and the distance to where the car parks. Powercor lists EV chargers among the common reasons to upgrade a home's supply, and we lodge that request where it is needed. See EV charger installation.

Electrician Little River: how booking works

  1. Call 1300 025 555 or use the contact form. Tell us the job, where on the property it is, and roughly how old the house and switchboard are.
  2. We book a time that suits you. Unsafe faults are treated as emergencies, day or night.
  3. We check the job and the switchboard and quote before any work starts.
  4. We do the work and test it, and you receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety: within 30 days for work such as power points, and shortly after the inspection for a new main switchboard.

Either side of Little River, we also cover Lara, towards Geelong, and Werribee, towards Melbourne. For the rest of our area, see the Geelong electrician page.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an electrician Little River residents can call after hours?

Yes. CabledIN takes 24/7 emergency call-outs in Little River on 1300 025 555. If the whole area has lost power, call Powercor on 13 24 12. If anyone is in danger or there is a fire, call 000.

Which council covers Little River?

Two do. The locality is split between the City of Greater Geelong, which counts it in its You Yangs ward, and the City of Wyndham. Your rates notice shows which covers your address. The electrical rules are the same either way.

Can you run power to a shed or garage on a larger block?

Yes. We check the switchboard has room for a new circuit, then size the cable for the distance. Exposed cable outside goes in conduit, and the length of the run is one of the main things the quote allows for.

Who looks after a private power line on a rural property?

The property owner. Powercor says the owner is responsible for a private electric line's condition and for keeping trees clear of it, and only a registered electrical contractor may work on it.

Can I connect a generator to my house during a blackout?

No. Energy Safe Victoria says never to connect a generator to house wiring. If you rely on a generator during outages, talk to a licensed electrician first.

Do you install EV chargers in Little River?

Yes. We check the switchboard, the supply and where the car parks before quoting. If the supply needs upgrading, we lodge the request with Powercor, and you receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety for the install.

What are the warning signs of faulty wiring?

Energy Safe Victoria lists old switchboards, particularly those without a safety switch, old or broken switches and power points, flickering lights, and sparks from switchboards, switches or power points. Fuses that blow often, or a safety switch that trips often, also mean the wiring should be inspected.

What should I do if water gets into my house in a storm?

Keep the power off until a licensed electrician has tested the wiring, and do not use appliances that got wet until they have been tested. For storm and flood help, call the SES on 132 500.
