Outdoor power, cameras and air conditioning for St Leonards homes, by CabledIN

Our recent work as an electrician St Leonards households book has centred on air conditioning, security cameras and safety switch protection at the switchboard. We also install outdoor lights and power, ceiling fans and lighting. CabledIN, a licensed Registered Electrical Contractor (REC 30925) in North Geelong, covers the whole Bellarine Peninsula with 24/7 emergency call-outs.

An outdoor light, a fan or a camera repair is usually one visit. Anything needing its own circuit can take longer when the board is full. We quote after seeing the job.

Electrician St Leonards: what our work here has involved

  • Air conditioning, the most common job in our St Leonards records (more below).
  • Outdoor power: a weatherproof isolating switch beside an outdoor unit.
  • Security cameras, including tracing the fault in a camera system that had stopped working.
  • Switchboard work, adding a combined circuit breaker and safety switch to a circuit.

We also install ceiling fans set by a wall controller, plus switches and lighting.

Air conditioning installs in St Leonards

Air conditioning shows up in our St Leonards records, including a new split system. We install wall-mounted split systems, multi-head systems and ducted reverse-cycle air conditioning, and each one gets its own circuit from the switchboard, protected by a combined circuit breaker and safety switch, with a weatherproof isolating switch beside the outdoor unit. If an older switchboard has no room for that circuit, we tell you when we quote, not on the day. See air conditioning installation for sizes and how an install runs.

St Leonards homes, by the numbers

St Leonards is a coastal township on the eastern shore of the Bellarine Peninsula, facing east across Port Phillip Bay. It had a pier by 1862, and Victorian Places notes it has grown steadily since the 1960s. At the 2021 Census it had 3,542 residents. Nine in ten homes are separate houses (91.9 per cent), the median age was 56, and 48.5 per cent of homes were owned outright. The ABS also counted 44.8 per cent of private dwellings as unoccupied on Census night.

Because the town has grown steadily since the 1960s, some houses are now more than 50 years old, well past the 30-year point at which Energy Safe Victoria wants the wiring checked by a licensed electrician. Older boards may still run on rewireable fuses, with one safety switch (RCD) or none; a safety switch turns the power off within 0.03 of a second if it senses a leak.

If the house sits empty for weeks at a time

If you are not at your St Leonards house all year, a few electrical things matter more:

  • A tripped safety switch stays off until someone resets it. If it trips while you are away, the fridge or freezer on that circuit stays off too. If you find it off, unplug everything on that circuit before switching it back on; if it trips again, call an electrician.
  • Test when you arrive. Energy Safe Victoria says to test safety switches every three months, and CFA advises testing smoke alarms monthly. Arrival day makes an easy habit.
  • Outdoor lights on a sensor light the path when you arrive after dark.
  • Cameras that still record. If a camera has stopped, we find the fault and fix it, as we have in St Leonards.

Outdoor power and lights near the bay

We fit lights for paths, decks and driveways, and weatherproof switched power points on outside walls, with cable in conduit where it would otherwise be exposed. Anything outside should be rated for outdoor use. If the safety switch starts tripping after rain and the culprit is an outdoor light or power point, moisture may be getting in: leave that circuit off and have it checked. See outdoor light installation.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a 24/7 electrician St Leonards homes can call?

Yes. Call 1300 025 555 at any hour: our emergency call-outs run 24/7 across St Leonards and the rest of the Bellarine. If the whole street has lost power, ring Powercor on 13 24 12. If there is a fire or someone is hurt, call 000.

The safety switch tripped while we were away. What should we do?

Unplug the appliances on that circuit and reset the switch. If it stays on, plug them back in one at a time to find the one that trips it. If it will not reset, or trips with nothing plugged in, leave it off and call a licensed electrician.

Can you fix a security camera system that has stopped recording?

Yes. We find the fault in the cameras, cabling or power supply and fix it, and we install new camera systems too.

Can you add a power point on the deck or in the carport?

Yes. Outdoors we fit weatherproof switched power points, with any exposed cable run in conduit, and make sure the outlet is protected by a safety switch. It is tested before you use it.

Can a ceiling fan have a speed control on the wall?

Yes. We can wire the fan to a wall controller so the speed is set at the switch. It suits bedrooms and living areas, and there is no remote to keep track of.

Is it worth checking the wiring before we buy a house in St Leonards?

Yes, if the house is older. Energy Safe Victoria's advice is to have a home built before the 1980s checked before you move in, and to have the wiring of any house over 30 years old checked.

Do I need an electrician to replace a hard-wired smoke alarm?

Yes. A hard-wired 240 V alarm can only be installed or replaced by a licensed electrician, though anyone can change its battery. Replace every alarm at 10 years.

Do you also cover Indented Head and Portarlington?

Yes. We cover the whole Bellarine Peninsula, including Indented Head, Portarlington, Drysdale and Clifton Springs, from our base in North Geelong.
