EV chargers, safety switches and storm-damage call-outs for Staughton Vale homes, by CabledIN

Our electrician Staughton Vale service covers the whole house: switchboards and safety switches, power points and lighting, smoke alarms, EV chargers and 24/7 emergency call-outs. Every job runs under REC 30925, our Registered Electrical Contractor number, with more than 20 years' experience behind it.

An extra power point is usually one visit. On a rural property, where the work sits moves the price: a job far from the switchboard needs a longer cable run. We see it, then quote.

Staughton Vale: a few homes beside a national park

Staughton Vale is a small rural locality in the City of Greater Geelong, north of Anakie, and Victorian Places counts it as part of the Anakie district. The south-east section of the Brisbane Ranges National Park takes up most of its area, so private properties are few.

The 2021 Census counted 105 people in 38 private dwellings. The ABS publishes little else for an area this small, and no breakdown of home types. One figure it does give is useful: households average 2.9 people, against 2.5 for Victoria.

Electrician Staughton Vale: what homes here typically need

A full household on a rural property makes three things worth getting right:

  • Enough circuits. A circuit breaker that drops when the evening rush starts is protecting wiring that is carrying too much. The fix is spreading the load over more circuits, sometimes with a switchboard upgrade.
  • Room for an EV charger. If the household car goes electric, the charger needs space on the switchboard and enough supply. EV chargers are among the reasons Powercor gives for supply upgrades, which only a registered electrical contractor can request. See EV charger installation.
  • A safety switch (RCD) that works. Energy Safe Victoria says to press each test button every three months and check the power goes off on that circuit. A circuit that stays live after the press means the switch needs checking. See safety switch installation.

Private power lines and the trees around them

Some rural properties take their power through poles and wires of their own: a private electric line. Powercor, the distributor across western Victoria, says more than 19,000 of its customers have one. If your property does:

  • Upkeep falls to the owner, trees and branches included, and any work on the line must be done by a registered electrical contractor.
  • Powercor inspects private lines every three years. Energy Safe Victoria's limit is normally 37 months between inspections.
  • A defect notice sets a date. Vegetation near a service line is one of the defects Powercor names. Once a registered electrical contractor has fixed it and sent Powercor the certificate, a disconnected supply is reconnected free.

Our guide explains what a Powercor defect notice means.

Storms, outages and fallen lines

  1. Work out whose fault it is. Look at Powercor's outage map online, or see if the neighbours have power. Powercor's fault line, 13 24 12, takes outage reports day and night; your bill names your distributor if you are unsure.
  2. If the network is on but your house is off, reset a tripped safety switch once. If the switch keeps dropping, or nothing has tripped, call a licensed electrician: the fault may be in your own wiring.
  3. Stay 10 metres or more from a fallen line. Treat it as live, report it on 13 24 12, and call 000 if a life is at risk.
  4. If storm water gets inside, the power stays off until a licensed electrician has tested the wiring, and anything wet, appliances included, is tested before use. The SES takes storm and flood calls on 132 500.

How booking works from Staughton Vale

Call 1300 025 555 or use the contact form, and tell us what the job is, where it sits on the property and what the switchboard looks like. We come out, look at the job and the board, and you approve the quote before work begins. When testing is finished, the Certificate of Electrical Safety follows: within 30 days for jobs like lights and power points, and after the independent inspection for a new main switchboard.

Anakie, Steiglitz and the Brisbane Ranges district

Staughton Vale's neighbours include Anakie to the south and Steiglitz to the west, and we cover both. Our Geelong electrician page takes in the city and all the towns around it.

Frequently asked questions

Electrician Staughton Vale emergencies: can I call at night?

Yes, at any hour of any day, on 1300 025 555. If anything is burning or anyone is hurt, 000 comes first.

Does Staughton Vale come under Greater Geelong council?

Yes. It is in the council's You Yangs ward, the same ward as Anakie.

Who has to keep trees clear of my power line?

On your own land, you do. Powercor lists vegetation near the service line among the common defects it finds, and the owner of a private electric line is responsible for keeping it clear.

How often are private power lines inspected?

Powercor inspects private electric lines every three years and sends owners a reminder each year. Energy Safe Victoria says the gap is normally no more than 37 months.

A tree has brought down the line to my house. What now?

Keep at least 10 metres away and keep everyone else back, because the line may still be live. Ring 000 first if a person is at risk, then report it to Powercor on 13 24 12.

Why does a breaker trip when everyone is home?

A circuit breaker cuts the power when its wiring carries more than it safely can, often when several big appliances run at once. Resetting it over and over is not a fix: we find which circuit is overloaded.

What does a rural house need for an EV charger?

Space on the switchboard, a supply that can take the extra load, and a route from the board to where the car parks. We check all three before quoting, and lodge any supply upgrade request with Powercor.

Are Anakie and Steiglitz in your area too?

Yes. Both border Staughton Vale, and our area takes in Lara, Little River, Moorabool and the rest of Geelong as well.
