Recent work in Werribee South homes
Our recent Werribee South work includes:
- After-hours fault finding on power that kept tripping, traced to a faulty appliance on that circuit.
- Replacing a bathroom heat, light and fan unit, with fault location as part of the job.
Market gardens, a river mouth and a mix of homes
Werribee South is a rural area on alluvial land where the Werribee River enters Port Phillip Bay. Once part of the Chirnside Werribee Park estate, it became a State Rivers and Water Supply Commission irrigation settlement in 1912. Soldier settlers took up farms along Diggers Road after the First World War, and Italian families, most of them Sicilian, who arrived in the 1920s later turned dairy holdings into market gardens. Victorian Places still called those gardens a significant source of fresh produce in 2015, and noted a settlement at the river mouth with jetties, a marina and a caravan park.
The City of Wyndham describes Werribee South as a large agricultural and tourist area, home to Werribee Park Mansion and Gardens, Werribee Open Range Zoo and Wyndham Harbour.

Houses, units and homes owned for years
In 2021 the Census found 2,392 people living in Werribee South, in 1,167 private dwellings. Three in four homes (74.2 per cent) were separate houses, and 17.4 per cent were flats or apartments, above the Victorian figure of 12.1 per cent. The median age was 45, against 38 for Victoria. Four in ten homes were owned outright, and three in ten were rented.
- A unit needs the same smoke alarm and safety switch protection as a house, often with less room to run new cable.
- A house you have owned for many years may still have its original switchboard.
Electrician Werribee South: when the power trips at night
A safety switch that drops in the middle of the night is not proof of bad wiring. It is built to notice current leaking to earth, whether from an appliance, a power point or the wiring. Safe checks you can make:
- Find the switch that is down on the board.
- Pull the plugs of everything on that circuit and lift the switch once.
- Reconnect them one by one. If one sends the switch down again, keep that appliance unplugged until it has been checked.
- Still dropping with nothing plugged in? The fault is in the house wiring or a fixed appliance such as the oven. Leave the switch down and phone us.
When the cause is not obvious, we trace it with test instruments, circuit by circuit, and quote the repair once it is found. Faults that cannot wait until morning go to our 24/7 emergency call-outs. More on fault finding and repairs.
Bathroom heat, light and fan units
A combined bathroom unit holds heat lamps, an exhaust fan and a light in one ceiling fitting, usually with a switch for each. Testing shows whether a failed part can be repaired or the whole unit should go. A replacement involves:
- turning off the circuit and confirming with a tester that it is dead;
- removing the old unit and checking the ceiling opening, since a new unit may not match the old cut-out;
- fixing the new unit, connecting each function to its switch and joining the fan to its duct;
- testing the circuit and the safety switch, then running the heat, fan and light.
See bathroom heater installation and exhaust fans.

Switchboards that predate safety switches
Among Energy Safe Victoria's signs that wiring may be faulty is an old switchboard with no safety switch. At your own board, look for:
- fuses where you would expect circuit breakers;
- nothing with a test button on it;
- sparks, or a smell of burning;
- a fuse that keeps blowing, or a switch that keeps tripping.
A look at the board shows whether adding safety switches will do, or whether replacing it is the better answer. A full board replacement is prescribed work, so it is checked by an independent inspector before the power comes back, and every final circuit on the new board gets safety switch protection. An old board may be mounted on a backing panel containing asbestos, so never drill into it or cut it. See switchboard upgrades.

Everything else we fit and fix
Beyond those jobs, Werribee South homes can book:
- power points, lights inside and out, and ceiling fans;
- hard-wired smoke alarms;

Frequently asked questions
My power keeps tripping at night. Who do I ring?
CabledIN, on 1300 025 555, day or night. For a fire or an injury, ring 000 before anyone else.
My bathroom heat, light and fan unit has stopped. Can it be swapped?
Yes. We remove the old unit, fit the new one, wire the heat, fan and light to their switches and test the circuit. If the new unit is a different size, we adjust the ceiling opening.
Is Werribee South part of Werribee?
No. Werribee South is its own locality in the City of Wyndham, although it shares the 3030 postcode with Werribee. We cover both.
Is a flat or unit in Werribee South any different to wire?
The same electrical rules apply as in a house, and the same advice on smoke alarms and safety switches. Access is the difference, so tell us where the unit's switchboard is when you book.
My house still has fuses. Is that a problem?
Fuses only guard the circuits against overload and short-circuit damage. They give a person who touches a live part no protection; that is the job of a safety switch (RCD). We can look at the board and tell you whether to add safety switches or replace it.
Does your electrician Werribee South service reach the river mouth?
Yes. It covers the whole locality, from the market garden areas to the settlement at the mouth of the Werribee River, and so do our 24/7 emergency call-outs.
Does a new bathroom fan or heater need a certificate?
Yes. No job is too small to need one: the Certificate of Electrical Safety covers all electrical installation work, and for a fan or heater your copy is due within 30 days.
The whole street has gone dark. Who do I ring?
A wide outage belongs to the electricity distributor that owns the poles and wires, so report it to them. A power line on the ground is always treated as live: keep 10 metres or more away, and ring 000 if someone is at risk.
