Outdoor power: the work we do most in Drysdale
Outdoor work came up in most of our Drysdale jobs, more than any other kind. It usually means one or more of these:
- Weatherproof power points on outside walls, switched at the outlet so they can be turned off where you stand.
- Heavier-duty outdoor outlets. 20 and 32 amp weatherproof outlets for equipment that draws more than a standard outlet can supply.
- Cable in conduit where it runs along a wall or under the eaves, protected from sun and knocks.
- Lighting, inside and out. See outdoor lighting installation for sensor, garden and entry lights.
Inside, we have added power points too, including 15 and 20 amp outlets for appliances that need them.
Data cabling and Wi-Fi that reaches the yard
Data work is the other thing that sets Drysdale apart in our records. Jobs here have included Cat6 cable runs to wall data points, and a run from the network switch out to a wireless access point mounted outside, so the Wi-Fi covers the yard as well as the house.
A cabled access point or wall data point gives a steadier connection than asking one modem to reach every corner. It suits a TV, a games console or a desk where someone works from home. See data cabling for how a job is planned, from the modem to each outlet.

Electrician Drysdale: what local homes need, and why
Drysdale was an agricultural township until the 1950s. It has since grown into an expanding town that now merges with Clifton Springs, and the council describes it as keeping some of its former rural character while becoming popular with commuters. At the 2021 Census it had 4,976 residents and 2,200 private dwellings.
The housing mix differs a little from its neighbours. Most homes are separate houses (88.7 per cent), but nearly one in ten is a semi-detached house, terrace or townhouse (9.7 per cent), far more than in Clifton Springs or Curlewis. The median age is 52, and 47.4 per cent of homes are owned outright.
A town that has grown over several decades has houses of many ages. An older board may have no spare room for the circuit a new outdoor outlet or EV charger needs, which is when safety switches or a switchboard upgrade become part of the job. Newer homes often have the space, and the work is simply adding what the house was built without.
EV chargers and the switchboard
An EV charger is one of the biggest loads a house can take on. Before we quote one in Drysdale we check the switchboard and the supply. Powercor lists EV chargers among the common reasons a home's supply needs upgrading, and any change to the supply is applied for by the electrician, not the homeowner. See EV charger installation for where to put the charger and what the job involves.
Why outdoor electrical work needs a licence
A power point on an outside wall can look like a simple job. In Victoria it is not one you can do yourself. Energy Safe Victoria's own warning about DIY electrical work is blunt: "it's illegal and it can also be deadly". Any equipment running above extra-low voltage must be installed and connected by a licensed electrician.
Done properly, a new circuit is tested before it goes live, including the operation of its safety switch, and you receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety that records the work. Keep it: the contractor only has to keep its copy for three years.

Frequently asked questions
Can you put a power point on an outside wall?
Yes. We fit weatherproof switched outlets on outside walls, with the cable in conduit where it is exposed, and test the circuit before it goes live. You receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety for the work.
Electrician Drysdale: can you get the Wi-Fi to reach the backyard?
Yes. A dependable way is to run data cable from your network switch to a wireless access point mounted outside. We have done exactly that in Drysdale, as well as Cat6 data points inside the house.
What is a 15 amp power point, and do I need one?
Some equipment comes with a plug that will not fit a standard 10 amp power point because it draws more current. It needs a 15 amp outlet on a suitable circuit, and we check the switchboard can supply it first.
Will my switchboard handle an EV charger?
We check before quoting. An older board may need room made or an upgrade, and Powercor lists EV chargers among the common reasons for upgrading a home's supply. If the supply needs changing, the electrician applies for it.
Is a data point better than Wi-Fi for a TV?
For a TV, games console or work-from-home desk that stays in one place, a cabled data point gives a steadier connection than Wi-Fi, and leaves the Wi-Fi with less to carry for everything else.
Do I get a certificate for an outdoor power point?
Yes. A Certificate of Electrical Safety must be provided for all electrical installation work in Victoria, whatever the size of the job. For a power point, your copy is due within 30 days.
Do you install outdoor lights as well as power?
Yes. We install sensor lights, entry lights and garden lighting with fittings made for the weather, wired to a switch, sensor or timer.
Do you cover Clifton Springs, Curlewis and Portarlington?
Yes. We work right across the Bellarine Peninsula, including Clifton Springs, Curlewis, Portarlington and Mannerim.
