EV chargers, surge protection and repairs for Meredith homes, by CabledIN

Electrician Meredith bookings with CabledIN cover home EV chargers, surge protection at the switchboard, safety switches, lighting and power points, and our 24/7 emergency call-outs reach Meredith too. We hold REC 30925 and back our work with a lifetime workmanship warranty.

Before we price a charger, we look at the switchboard, the supply and how far the parking spot is from the board. Where the board has room, a charger or a surge diverter is usually one visit. A board that has to be replaced first is independently inspected before it goes live.

Recent work in Meredith: an EV charger and surge protection

Recent work in our Meredith records includes a home EV charger and surge protection for the whole house. The charger has a circuit to itself, run from the switchboard and protected by an RCBO (a breaker and safety switch in one), with an isolating switch beside it.

The two belong together. A charger is wired in, so a plug-in surge board can do nothing for it. A diverter at the switchboard looks after every circuit that board feeds, the charger's included. See EV charger installation and surge protection.

Charging an EV at a Meredith home: what we check first

What we checkWhy it matters
Space on the switchboardOur practice is a separate circuit for the charger, with a breaker and safety switch of its own, so the board needs a spare place. If the board is full or still on fuses, it needs work first.
The supply to the houseAdding an EV charger is one of the usual triggers, Powercor says, for a home supply upgrade. The request has to come from a registered electrical contractor, so we lodge it.
Single-phase or three-phasePowercor says higher-capacity home chargers need three-phase power, so they do not suit every house. We confirm your supply before you choose one.
Where the car parksThe distance from the board sets the cable size and route, and we fit an isolating switch beside the charger.

Who may legally install a charger is covered in our guide, can a normal electrician install an EV charger?

Talk to a licensed Geelong electrician (REC 30925).

Surge protection at the switchboard

A surge diverter sits idle at normal voltage. When the supply spikes, it gives the extra energy a path to earth before most of it reaches your appliances. It is worth having with an EV charger or an induction cooktop.

  • It does not stop electric shock. Energy Safe Victoria says surge diverters are not safety switches, so you want both.
  • It needs room and a sound earth. An old, full board is upgraded first.
  • It can need replacing. Ask us to check it whenever we are working on your board.

Electrician Meredith: wiring in an 1850s township

Meredith sits on the Midland Highway between Geelong and Ballarat, in the north-east of Golden Plains Shire, with grazing country around it. The town was surveyed in 1851 and 1852, and its 1862 bluestone station and 1878 shire hall are on the Register of the National Estate. The 2021 Census counted 821 people and 361 private dwellings, almost all of them separate houses, and a median age of 45 against 38 across Victoria.

Homes here range from older buildings to farm and rural-residential houses, so we never assume what is behind the switchboard door. An older home can still have a fuse board with no safety switch, which Energy Safe Victoria counts among its warning signs of faulty wiring. It also suggests having a pre-1980s home checked before moving in. See switchboard upgrades.

Outages and storms: who to call from Meredith

Meredith is inside our 24/7 emergency call-out area. Who to ring:

  • The whole area is dark: a network outage. Report it to Powercor, which runs the network across western Victoria, on 13 24 12.
  • Just your house has no power: reset a tripped safety switch, but only once. If it trips again, or the neighbours have lights and you do not, ring us: your own service may be damaged.
  • A line is down: assume it is live, stay 10 metres or more away and ring 13 24 12, or 000 if anyone's life is in danger.

If you run a generator in an outage, keep it off the house circuits altogether; Energy Safe Victoria is firm on that.

Not sure what you need? Tell us what is happening and we will talk it through.

Booking a job in Meredith

Call 1300 025 555, day or night, or use our contact form. For a charger, tell us where the car parks and how far that is from the switchboard; a photo of the board helps. We look over the board and the supply, then send a quote. Nothing starts until you approve the price, and a Certificate of Electrical Safety is issued for the finished job.

Lethbridge, Steiglitz, Shelford and beyond

Meredith's neighbours include Lethbridge to the south-east, Steiglitz to the east and Shelford to the south-west, and emergency call-outs run 24/7 in all three. The Geelong electrician page links every other part of the region.

Frequently asked questions

Is CabledIN an emergency electrician Meredith residents can reach 24/7?

Yes. The 1300 025 555 line is answered day and night, and call-outs reach the township and the rural properties around it. For fire or anyone injured, 000 comes first.

Will you install a home EV charger in Meredith?

Yes. A home charger on its own circuit, with an RCBO and an isolating switch, is part of our recent work in Meredith. We check what the board and the supply can take before we quote.

Can I charge my EV from an ordinary power point?

You can, but Powercor says a regular socket suits occasional use or short trips. If the car covers longer distances most days, a wall charger wired in by a licensed electrician charges faster.

What does whole-home surge protection cover?

It protects the circuits wired through that switchboard, including hard-wired items such as an EV charger or an oven. It does not cover surges on phone or data lines, and it does nothing to prevent electric shock.

Can a Meredith farmhouse with a fuse board take a charger?

Usually the board comes first. We give every charger a separate breaker and safety switch, and an old fuse board rarely has room for them. A new main board must pass an independent inspection before it is turned on.

Which council covers Meredith?

Meredith is in Golden Plains Shire, although part of the Meredith locality falls in Moorabool Shire. For a particular property, go by the council on your rates notice. The electrical rules do not change across the boundary.

The power is back after an outage. Should I check anything?

Should a safety switch refuse to reset, leave it and ring us. If you have a surge diverter, mention it when you book and we check it at the board.

Does an EV charger come with a Certificate of Electrical Safety?

Yes. Every electrical installation job needs one, whatever its size. File your copy safely, since the electrician's own copy only has to be kept for three years.

Are Lethbridge, Steiglitz and Shelford covered too?

Yes. All three border Meredith, and our 24/7 call-outs reach each of them.
