Electrician Batesford: the jobs we are booked for
Batesford is a small place, so we describe the work rather than count it. The pattern is clear all the same: households here are adding to their homes, not chasing old faults.
- Power points. The job that comes up most: new double power points indoors, and outlets placed where a TV or appliance now sits. See power point installation.
- Smoke alarms. Old alarms replaced with mains-powered units that have a 10-year lithium backup battery.
- Lighting. LED downlights, dimmers and new switches indoors, and fluorescent carport lights brought back into working order.
- Ceiling fans. A fan with a built-in light, run from a wall controller.
- TV and data. A brush plate that takes the cables into the wall behind a mounted TV, and a wired data point.
- EV charging. A home charger, after a check of the switchboard and supply.

What Batesford homes are like, and what they need
Batesford is a rural village on the Moorabool River, where the Midland Highway crosses it, about 10 km north-west of Geelong. Victorian Places describes the area as suited to rural and residential living close to Geelong, with market gardens in the river valley. The 2021 Census counted 1,141 residents in 354 private dwellings, and three figures from that count shape the electrical work:
- Almost every home is a separate house (99.7 per cent). That usually means a roof space to run cable through, and carports and outdoor areas that need light and power.
- Households are large, averaging 3.3 people. More people means more devices and appliances, which is why extra power points top our list here.
- Very few homes are rented (2.7 per cent). Our Batesford work reflects owners improving their own homes: fans, lighting, data and EV charging.
For any house over 30 years old, Energy Safe Victoria's advice is a wiring check by a licensed electrician.

Smoke alarms in Batesford: getting the type right
Smoke alarms are among the most common jobs we do in Batesford, usually old alarms swapped for mains-powered ones with a 10-year lithium backup battery. What the law asks of your home depends on its build date:
| Your home | Minimum smoke alarm requirement |
|---|---|
| Built before 1 August 1997 | Battery-powered alarms are enough |
| Built after 1 August 1997 | 240 V alarms wired to the mains, with a backup battery |
| Built or substantially renovated after 1 May 2014, and needing more than one alarm | The alarms must also be interconnected, so one sets off the rest |
Two things apply to every home: each alarm should be replaced after 10 years, and mains-powered alarms must be fitted and replaced by a licensed electrician. Placement matters too. By law you need an alarm between each sleeping area and the rest of the house, and one on every storey; fire services advise one in every bedroom, hallway and living area. See smoke alarm installation.

Lighting, ceiling fans and carports
Most of our Batesford lighting work is upgrading what is there: LED downlights in place of older fittings, a dimmer where a room needs softer light, and worn switches replaced. Outside, carport and outdoor-area lighting is a regular request, with any exposed cable run in conduit. See outdoor lighting.
A ceiling fan with a built-in light is wired to a wall controller, so the fan speed and the light can be set separately. We check the ceiling and the switchboard before quoting. See ceiling fan installation.
TV, data and EV charging
A wall-mounted TV looks best with no cables showing. We put power and an antenna outlet behind where the screen will hang, plus a brush plate that feeds the leads into the wall. A wired data point gives a steadier connection than Wi-Fi. See TV points and wall mounting.
For an EV charger, we check the switchboard and the supply first. EV chargers are one of the usual reasons Powercor gives for upgrading a home's supply, and if yours needs it, a registered electrical contractor applies to Powercor for the change. The charger itself is electrical installation work, so it is done by a licensed electrician and certified.

Booking an electrician in Batesford
Ring 1300 025 555 or send us a message through the contact form. It helps to tell us:
- what you want added or fixed, and in which rooms;
- roughly how old the house is;
- whether any of the work is outdoors or in the carport.
We book a time that suits you, look at the job and the switchboard before starting, and quote before any work begins. A list of small jobs can be done in one visit. When we finish, we test every circuit we have worked on and issue a Certificate of Electrical Safety; for lights, power points and smoke alarms, your copy is due within 30 days.
When the power goes off in Batesford
We take 24/7 emergency call-outs in Batesford on 1300 025 555. Two quick questions tell you who to ring. Are the neighbours out as well? Then the fault is on the network, and Powercor, the electricity distributor, takes it on 13 24 12. Is it only your place? Then look at the switchboard: if a safety switch has dropped, unplug what is on that circuit and reset it once, and ring us if it will not stay on.
A tingle from a tap or appliance is different: stay away from it and call Powercor on 13 24 12 straight away. For smoke or fire, call 000. Beyond resetting a switch, leave it to the electrician, because DIY electrical work is illegal in Victoria.
Nearby areas we also cover
Batesford borders Fyansford and Hamlyn Heights, and we work in both, as well as Bell Park, Bell Post Hill and Moorabool. Elsewhere in Golden Plains we cover Bannockburn and the towns around it. For everywhere else, see our Geelong electrician page.

Frequently asked questions
Do you come out to Batesford for one smoke alarm or power point?
Yes. Much of our Batesford work is that size: a power point, a light or a smoke alarm. If you have a list, we can do it in one visit.
Which council is Batesford in?
Batesford is divided between the City of Greater Geelong and Golden Plains Shire, so it depends on which side you live. It makes no difference to electrical work: the same Victorian rules apply on both sides.
My Batesford house is older. Are battery smoke alarms still legal?
If it was built before 1 August 1997, yes: battery-powered alarms meet the legal minimum. A house built after that date needs 240 V mains-powered alarms with a backup battery. Whatever the type, each alarm should be replaced after 10 years.
How often should I test my smoke alarms?
The CFA advises testing them every month, cleaning them once a year and replacing 9 V batteries yearly. Once an alarm is 10 years old, replace the whole unit.
Can you hide the cables behind a wall-mounted TV?
Yes. A power outlet and an antenna outlet go in behind the screen, with a brush plate that takes the leads into the wall.
Can you install a ceiling fan with a light?
Yes. A fan with a light kit is wired to a wall controller, so the fan and light work separately. A ceiling fan is fixed wiring, so it must be installed by a licensed electrician.
Will my switchboard handle an EV charger?
Often, but not always, so the board and the supply are the first things we look at. If the charger means the supply has to be upgraded, a registered electrical contractor applies to Powercor for it.
Do you also work in Fyansford and Hamlyn Heights?
Yes, along with Bell Park, Bell Post Hill, Moorabool and Bannockburn.
