Electrician Teesdale: what we are called out for
Teesdale has fewer jobs in our records than the bigger suburbs, so this page sets out the kinds of work rather than numbers. Two kinds of job lead, with a spread of others behind them:
- Switchboards. Repairs, checks and upgrades. See switchboard upgrades.
- Lighting and switches. Switch plates upgraded so new lights and fans get their own switch, LED fittings, and outdoor lights. See lighting installation.
- Exhaust and inline fans. Wired to a switch of their own rather than to the light.
- Emergency call-outs and fault finding. Tracing faults that have cut the power.
- Inspections, safety switches and outdoor power. Including weatherproof power points, with exposed cable run in rigid conduit.

Teesdale: large blocks in a growing town
Teesdale is a rural town in Golden Plains Shire, first surveyed in 1852. It is growing: the 2021 Census counted 2,308 residents and 758 private dwellings, and the shire's Teesdale Structure Plan puts township growth at about 2.5 per cent a year.
The same plan keeps Teesdale low density. The town has no reticulated sewerage, and a minimum lot size of 4,000 square metres will continue to maintain its rural character. Almost every occupied home is a separate house (99.4 per cent), only 5.3 per cent are rented, and households average 3.1 people.
Talk to a licensed Geelong electrician (REC 30925).
What big blocks and full households mean for the wiring
On a block of 4,000 square metres or more, the switchboard can be a long way from the places that need power, such as a carport or an outdoor living area. A long run needs cable sized for the distance. Where cable is exposed outside, we run it in rigid conduit and fit weatherproof outlets and switches, which is the kind of outdoor work we have done in Teesdale.
An average household of 3.1 people means a lot running at the same time. If circuits trip when the oven, kettle and washing machine are all on, the board may not have enough circuits for the way the house is used now.
Once a house is past 30 years old, Energy Safe Victoria recommends getting a licensed electrician to look at the wiring, and an ageing board with no safety switch is one of the warning signs it names. An electrical safety inspection shows what needs doing and what can wait.
Switchboards in Teesdale: repair, upgrade or replace
Not every switchboard needs replacing. Where the existing board has circuit breakers and room to spare, safety switch protection can usually be added to the power and lighting circuits. An older fuse board may need full replacement.
When a main switchboard is replaced in Victoria:
- every final circuit must have safety switch (RCD) protection;
- the work is prescribed, so an independent licensed electrical inspector checks it, and we arrange the inspection;
- the power cannot go back on to the new board until it has been inspected;
- you receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety for the work.
Older boards can be mounted on panels that contain asbestos, particularly black or dark brown panels installed before 1990. We check the panel before drilling anything, and you should never drill, cut or sand one yourself.
Light switches, LED fittings and exhaust fans
A lot of our Teesdale lighting work is about control. Adding a light or a fan often means swapping a one-gang or two-gang switch plate for a three-gang one, so each light and fan has its own switch.
That matters most for fans. An inline or ceiling exhaust fan wired to the light switch runs every time the light is on. On its own switch, it runs when you need it and stays off when you do not. See exhaust fan installation.
Elsewhere we replace older fittings with LED lights and fit outdoor lights. Any light that is wired in has to be installed by a licensed electrician.
Not sure what you need? Tell us what is happening and we will talk it through.
When the power goes off in Teesdale
Emergency call-outs in Teesdale are taken 24/7 on 1300 025 555. Before you ring, these checks are safe:
- Ask a neighbour. If they are off too, it is a network fault: call Powercor on 13 24 12, or check Powercor's live outage map.
- Check your switchboard. If a safety switch has tripped, unplug the appliances on that circuit and reset it once.
- If it will not reset, leave it and call us. The same applies if the street has power and your home does not, because your own supply may be damaged.
- If anything is hot, smoking or giving a tingle, keep everyone away. Call Powercor on 13 24 12 for a tingle, and 000 for fire.
Never connect a generator to the house wiring. If your safety switch trips often, our guide explains why a safety switch keeps tripping.
Booking from Teesdale
Phone 1300 025 555, or send the details through our contact form. Tell us the job, whether it is in the house or outside, and roughly how old the house and switchboard are. We arrange a time and look over the switchboard and the job, and you get a quote before anything starts. All our work is tested and certified with a Certificate of Electrical Safety. If the work includes a new main switchboard, we book the independent inspection as part of the job.
Bannockburn, Inverleigh and the towns around Teesdale
Teesdale's neighbours are Bannockburn, Inverleigh, Shelford and Lethbridge, and we cover all of them. For Geelong and the rest of our area, see the Geelong electrician page.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an after-hours electrician Teesdale residents can call?
Yes. Our emergency line, 1300 025 555, covers Teesdale and the surrounding Golden Plains towns 24/7. For fallen powerlines or a whole-street outage, call Powercor on 13 24 12, and call 000 if anyone is in danger.
Does my whole switchboard need replacing, or just part of it?
Often just part. If the board has circuit breakers and spare space, safety switch protection can usually be added circuit by circuit. Older fuse boards may need replacing, and then every circuit must have safety switch protection.
Can you put my exhaust fan on its own switch?
Yes. We replace the switch plate with one that has an extra switch and rewire the fan to it, so it no longer runs every time the light is on. We have done exactly this in Teesdale homes.
Can you run power to the far side of a large Teesdale block?
Yes. The distance affects the cable size and the price, and exposed cable outdoors goes in conduit with weatherproof outlets. We check the switchboard can take the extra circuit first.
Should I get the wiring checked in an older Teesdale house?
If it is more than 30 years old, yes. Energy Safe Victoria recommends a wiring check by a licensed electrician for houses of that age, and an inspection also tells you whether the board needs safety switches added.
Who arranges the inspection when a switchboard is replaced?
We do. Replacing a main switchboard is prescribed work, so the registered electrical contractor arranges an independent licensed electrical inspector. The new board stays off until it has been inspected.
Can I connect a generator to my house during an outage?
No. Energy Safe Victoria says never to connect a generator to house wiring. If you want to use a generator during outages, talk to a licensed electrician first.
What should I do if the lights flicker or go dim?
Keep your hands off the switchboard and anything metal. Turn off any power points you can reach safely and call Powercor on 13 24 12, as Energy Safe Victoria advises. Then have a licensed electrician check your side of the supply.
Do you also cover Bannockburn and Inverleigh?
Yes. Teesdale's neighbours Bannockburn, Inverleigh, Shelford and Lethbridge are all in our area, along with the rest of Golden Plains and Geelong.
