Electrician Torquay: what we are called out for
Our Torquay records are about finding and fixing problems more than adding new things:
- Fault finding in about two jobs out of three: circuits that trip, power points or lights that have stopped, and faults that come and go.

Why Torquay homes need this kind of work
Torquay began as Spring Creek, a farming district settled between the 1840s and 1860s. Town lots were sold in 1880 and the name changed to Torquay in 1892. It stayed small for a long time, with about 4,900 residents in 1991. The 2021 Census counted 18,534 people and 8,351 private dwellings, and the town's old holiday character has faded as it has grown.
So Torquay mixes houses built during the last three decades of growth with older houses from before it. That shapes the wiring:
- Older houses can still have an early switchboard, rewireable fuses and few or no safety switches. Energy Safe Victoria says a house more than 30 years old should have its wiring checked by a licensed electrician, and lists old switchboards without a safety switch among the warning signs of faulty wiring.
- Newer houses have modern boards, but faults still happen: a failing appliance, moisture in an outdoor fitting, or a circuit carrying more than it was designed for.
Nine in ten Torquay homes are separate houses (90.6 per cent). Torquay is in Surf Coast Shire, not the City of Greater Geelong, though the electrical rules are the same in both.

A safety switch that keeps tripping
A tripping safety switch is a common reason to call an electrician. A safety switch (RCD) cuts the power within 0.03 of a second when it detects electricity leaking from a circuit, and the leak can come from a faulty appliance, power point or wiring. The switch is doing its job. The question is where the leak is.
Safe checks you can make first:
- Unplug everything on the circuit that tripped, then reset the switch.
- If it stays on, reconnect the appliances one by one. If one trips it, that appliance is the likely cause.
- If it trips with nothing plugged in, or will not reset, stop there and call a licensed electrician.

Switchboard upgrades in Torquay: process and price
When a fault traces back to an old switchboard, or an inspection finds one with little protection, the answer is often a new board. In Victoria that works like this:
- A new main switchboard counts as prescribed work, so we arrange an independent licensed electrical inspector, and the power cannot go back on to the new board until it has been inspected.
- Every final circuit on the new board must have safety switch protection.
- You receive your Certificate of Electrical Safety shortly after the inspection.
- Some older switchboard panels contain asbestos, typically black or dark brown backing boards installed before 1990. Drilling or cutting them can release fibres, which is one more reason to leave the board to a licensed electrician.

Inspections before you buy, rent out or move in
About half of our Torquay jobs include an electrical safety inspection. The usual reasons:
- Buying or moving into an older house. Energy Safe Victoria advises that homes built before the 1980s should be checked before moving in.
- Renting it out. About one Torquay home in five was rented at the 2021 Census (21.3 per cent). Owners and property managers book a check of the switchboard, wiring and fittings, with access arranged with the household and the report sent to whoever booked.
