What counts as an electrical emergency

An electrical emergency is any fault that could hurt someone, start a fire, or leave the home without power you cannot do without. Call straight away for:

  • A burning smell, smoke, scorch marks or buzzing at the switchboard, a power point or a light fitting.
  • Sparks from a switch, power point or the switchboard.
  • A tingle or shock from a tap, showerhead or appliance.
  • A safety switch that has tripped and will not reset.
  • No power when the rest of the street has it.
  • Power to only part of the house, or lights that flicker and dim across several rooms.
  • Water in the wiring after a storm, a flood or a burst pipe.
  • Storm damage to the line running to your house, the bracket on the wall or the meter box.

One dead power point or a blown lamp can usually wait for a normal booking. If you are not sure, ring and describe it. We will tell you honestly whether it needs someone now.

What to do right now

  1. Keep people away. Do not touch the appliance, power point or switchboard that is sparking, hot or giving shocks.
  2. Fire or a person hurt: call 000. Never put water on an electrical fire. Turn off power at the source only if it is safe to reach. A fire blanket or dry chemical extinguisher suits a small fire. For anything larger, get out.
  3. Fallen powerline: treat it as live, keep well clear and report it to Powercor on 13 24 12.
  4. Tingle from a tap or shower: do not touch it again or go back into that area. Call Powercor on 13 24 12 immediately, then have a registered electrical contractor investigate.
  5. Flickering lights or power to only part of the house: do not touch the switchboard or anything metal, turn off the power points you can reach safely, and call Powercor.
  6. Call us on 1300 025 555 and tell us what you saw, heard or smelt, and what was running at the time.

Talk to a licensed Geelong electrician (REC 30925).

What is safe to check yourself

Electrical work is for licensed electricians only. In Victoria, doing it yourself is illegal and can be deadly. These checks involve no tools and no covers coming off:

  • Check with the neighbours or look at Powercor's live outage map. If the whole street is out, it is a network outage, not a fault in your home.
  • Look at the switchboard. If a safety switch (RCD) has tripped, reset it once.
  • If it trips again, unplug the appliances on that circuit and try once more. If it holds, plug them back in one at a time until you find the one that trips it, and leave that one unplugged.
  • If it will not reset with everything unplugged, leave it off and call an electrician.

Do not use an appliance that has been wet until it has been tested. Do not restore power to a house that has had water through it until the wiring has been tested by a licensed electrician. Never connect a generator to the house wiring.

What happens when our emergency electrician arrives

  1. On the phone. We ask what happened and tell you what to switch off or stay clear of until we get there.
  2. Make it safe. The first job is to isolate the faulty circuit or equipment so nobody can be hurt.
  3. Find the cause. We test the circuits with instruments instead of guessing. A tripping safety switch can come from a faulty power point, the wiring or an appliance.
  4. Repair or make safe. Where the part is on the van, we repair it on the spot. Where the repair needs parts, daylight or Powercor, we leave the fault isolated and restore power to the rest of the house where it is safe.
  5. Explain and price the rest. You are told what failed, what we did, and what any follow-up work involves before it is booked.
  6. Certificate. You receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety for the electrical installation work we carry out.

Not sure what you need? Tell us what is happening and we will talk it through.

Common emergency call-outs around Geelong

Our job records hold more than 150 fault-finding jobs, plus urgent call-outs in suburbs including Hamlyn Heights, Belmont, Lara, Newcomb, Leopold, Portarlington and Barwon Heads. The same faults come up again and again:

  • Safety switches and breakers that keep tripping. The most common part we replace on these jobs is a combined safety switch and circuit breaker. Our guide covers why a safety switch keeps tripping.
  • Loss of power to part of the house, traced to a failed connection, a damaged cable or the fuse box where the supply comes in.
  • Burnt or damaged switchboards that need a new enclosure. See switchboard upgrades.
  • Hot, cracked or scorched power points and failed isolating switches on outdoor equipment.
  • Damage where the supply meets the house. This can end in a Powercor defect notice, which we repair and certify under mains upgrades and Powercor defect repairs.
  • Smoke alarms sounding or chirping in the night. See smoke alarm installation.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a 24 hour emergency electrician in Geelong?

Yes. CabledIN takes emergency call-outs 24/7 and answers the phone around the clock on 1300 025 555. We cover Geelong and its suburbs, the Bellarine Peninsula, the Surf Coast and Golden Plains.

How quickly can an emergency electrician get to me?

It depends on where you are and what else is happening that night, so we do not promise a set time. When you call we tell you honestly when an electrician can be there and what to do until then.

Should I call Powercor or an electrician when the power goes out?

Check whether the neighbours are out too. If the whole street is out, call Powercor on 13 24 12. If the street has power and you do not, check your safety switch, then call an electrician.

My safety switch will not reset. Is that an emergency?

Treat it as urgent. A safety switch that will not reset is detecting a fault in the wiring or in something connected to it. Leave it off and call a licensed electrician.

What should I do if I smell burning from a power point or the switchboard?

Do not touch it. Turn off the power at the source only if it is safe to reach, keep people away and call us. If you see flames or smoke, get out and call 000.

I felt a tingle from the tap. Who do I call?

Do not touch the tap again or go back into that area. Call Powercor on 13 24 12 immediately, then have a registered electrical contractor investigate the wiring.

Can I use the power after water has come into the house?

No. Energy Safe Victoria says not to restore power until the wiring has been tested by a licensed electrician, and not to use appliances that got wet until they have been tested.

Will my power be back on the same night?

Often the fault can be isolated so the rest of the house has power while the repair is organised. Some faults need parts, an inspection or Powercor before supply can be restored, and we tell you which on the night.

Do you do emergency call-outs for rental properties and shared buildings?

Yes. We attend rental properties and shared buildings as well as homes, and small businesses too. Tell us who can give access to the switchboard and meter room when you call.
