Lighting, power points and fault finding for Belmont homes, by CabledIN

CabledIN is the licensed electrician Belmont (Geelong) households call for new lighting, extra power points and faults that need tracing. We have completed more than 15 jobs in Belmont in our records. We are a Registered Electrical Contractor, REC 30925, based in North Geelong.

A new light, power point or bathroom exhaust fan is usually one short visit. A fault takes as long as it takes to find: one that trips every time is quicker to trace than one that trips once a week. Each job is quoted once we have seen it, and comes with a Certificate of Electrical Safety.

Electrician Belmont: the jobs we are called for

Our Belmont job records are mostly everyday upgrades and repairs to homes people already live in:

  • Lighting is the most common Belmont job, in more than four in ten of them: LED downlights in place of older fittings, new switch plates, and extra lights in rooms that were too dark.
  • Power points come up nearly as often: doubles in place of singles, and new outlets where an extension lead had become permanent.
  • Fault finding is in more than a third: safety switches that trip, power points that have gone dead and lights that flicker.
  • Safety switches and switchboards: combined circuit breaker and safety switch units fitted circuit by circuit, and switchboard work where the old board has no room left.
  • Bathroom exhaust fans and smoke alarms, each in about one Belmont job in five.
  • Also: ceiling fans, outdoor lights and power, data points, security cameras and an EV charger.

Belmont houses: interwar, post-war and 1970s

Belmont lies south of the Barwon River, with Belmont Common along the river, Highton to the west and Waurn Ponds Creek to the south. Subdivision followed the new Barwon bridge and the tram in the 1920s. From the early 1950s post-war housing spread west towards Highton, and in the 1970s subdivision moved south towards Grovedale. Fewer than 3,000 people lived there before the Second World War; the 2021 Census counted 15,066.

So one Belmont street can hold an interwar house, a post-war house and a 1970s house side by side, each wired for a very different number of appliances. That shapes what we find:

  • Older houses can still have an early switchboard with rewireable fuses, and a safety switch on some circuits or none. Energy Safe Victoria lists old switchboards, particularly those without a safety switch, among the tell-tale signs of faulty wiring, and advises a wiring check by a licensed electrician for any house over 30 years old.
  • 1970s houses are past that mark as well. Whether one needs rewiring depends on what testing finds, not on the date alone; our guide does a 1970s house need rewiring? explains what decides it.
  • Townhouses and units. About 18 per cent of Belmont homes are semi-detached, row houses or townhouses, above the Victorian figure of 13.9 per cent. A townhouse can have a compact switchboard with few spare spaces, so we check the room on the board before quoting new circuits.

LED downlights, switches and ceiling fans

Lighting is the job we do most in Belmont. The usual requests:

  • LED downlights in place of older fittings, often several at once so a room is evenly lit.
  • New switch plates, including plates with two or three switches side by side.
  • Ceiling fans with a light kit in place of a ceiling light, on the existing switch or a new one.
  • Outdoor lights for the back yard, the side path and the front door.

Every new light must be installed by a licensed electrician. Lighting is non-prescribed work: no independent inspection, and your Certificate of Electrical Safety is due within 30 days.

Fault finding in Belmont: tripping circuits and dead power points

More than a third of our Belmont jobs start with something that has stopped working. Three safe checks tell you who to ring:

  1. Is the street out too? Then it is a network fault. Call Powercor, the electricity distributor for the Geelong region, on 13 24 12.
  2. Has a safety switch tripped? Unplug the appliances on that circuit and reset it. If it will not reset, or trips again straight away, call a licensed electrician.
  3. Are lights dimming or flickering across the house, or has only part of the house lost power? Energy Safe Victoria's advice is not to touch the switchboard or anything metal, to turn off the power points you can reach, and to call Powercor straight away.

Once it is safe, we trace the fault with testing, repair it, and test the circuit again before it goes back on. The common causes are on our electrical fault finding and repairs page.

Bathroom exhaust fans and smoke alarms

About one Belmont job in five includes a bathroom exhaust fan: replacing one that has stopped or become noisy, or fitting one where the bathroom never had it. Another one in five includes smoke alarms. The Victorian smoke alarm rules depend on when the home was built:

  • Homes built after 1 August 1997 must have 240 V mains-powered smoke alarms with a backup battery. Homes built before then need only battery alarms.
  • Homes built or substantially renovated after 1 May 2014 that need more than one alarm must have them interconnected, so they all sound together.
  • Every smoke alarm, hard-wired or battery, should be replaced every 10 years.
  • Hard-wired alarms must be installed and replaced by a licensed electrician.

Fire services recommend an alarm in every bedroom, hallway and living area, beyond the legal minimum.

Booking an electrician in Belmont

  1. Call 1300 025 555. For a fault, tell us what tripped, when it happens and what was running at the time.
  2. We book the visit for a day that suits you. A dangerous fault is handled as an emergency, day or night.
  3. The electrician looks at the job and at the switchboard, because any new circuit needs a space on the board, and we put safety switch protection on every circuit we add.
  4. You approve the quote before any work starts.
  5. The work is tested before it is switched on, and you receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an emergency electrician Belmont residents can call at night?

Yes. CabledIN takes 24/7 emergency call-outs in Belmont on 1300 025 555. If your neighbours have lost power too, call Powercor on 13 24 12 first. If anyone is in danger or there is a fire, call 000.

Do you cover Belmont in Geelong, VIC 3216?

Yes. This page is about Belmont (Geelong), in the City of Greater Geelong, south of the Barwon River. Belmont shares the 3216 postcode with Grovedale and Highton, and we cover all three.

Can you replace the old light fittings in my Belmont house with LED downlights?

Yes. Lighting is the job we do most in Belmont, and LED downlights in place of older fittings are a large part of it. We check the ceiling space and the circuit first, and you receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety for the work.

My Belmont townhouse has a small switchboard. Can I still add power points?

Often, yes. A new power point can sometimes join an existing circuit; a new circuit needs a spare space on the board. We look at the board first and tell you before quoting if it needs work to take the change.

My house in Belmont is more than 30 years old. Should the wiring be checked?

Energy Safe Victoria says yes: a house over 30 years old should have its wiring checked by a licensed electrician, and homes built before the 1980s should be checked before moving in. Belmont's housing is a mix of interwar, post-war and 1970s homes, all past that age.

Why does my safety switch trip when I use one appliance?

Often because that appliance is leaking current, which is exactly what a safety switch is built to detect. Unplug it and reset the switch. If the switch stays on without it, have the appliance checked; if it trips with nothing plugged in, call a licensed electrician.

Can you replace a noisy bathroom exhaust fan in Belmont?

Yes. About one Belmont job in five includes an exhaust fan, usually replacing one that has failed or become noisy. Connecting a fan is electrical installation work, so it is done by a licensed electrician and you receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety.

Do my smoke alarms have to be hard-wired?

It depends on when the home was built. Homes built after 1 August 1997 must have 240 V mains-powered alarms with a backup battery; older homes need only battery alarms. Every alarm should be replaced every 10 years.

Do you work for landlords and property managers in Belmont?

Yes. More than a third of Belmont homes are rented (35.1 per cent at the 2021 Census, against 28.5 per cent for Victoria). Owners and property managers book us for repairs, smoke alarms and electrical safety checks; we arrange a time with the people living there.

Can you find a fault that only happens now and then?

Yes, though it takes longer than a fault that is there all the time. Before we come, note when it happens, what was running and whether it had been raining. That tells us where to start testing.
