Residential electrician Geelong: what we do in a home
A residential electrician installs, repairs, tests and certifies the fixed wiring in a house, from the point where the supply reaches your property, through the switchboard, to every light, switch and power point. In Victoria this work must be done by a licensed electrician. Doing your own electrical work is illegal.
Whether you search for a domestic electrician, a home electrician or a residential electrician in Geelong, the work is the same. Almost every home visit we make is one of four kinds:
- Adding something. Extra power points, new lighting, a ceiling fan, an EV charger or security cameras.
- Fixing something. A safety switch that keeps tripping, half the house without power, an oven that will not heat or no hot water.
- Upgrading something. An old fuse board, tired wiring, consumer mains or a meter box that no longer suits the house.
- Checking something. An electrical health check of your home, an inspection before you buy or a smoke alarm test.

The jobs Geelong homes book most
Our job records, which begin in March 2026, show what Geelong households call an electrician for. Five kinds of work lead, close together:
- Switchboards. More than 200 jobs, from single repairs to full replacements.
- Safety switches. More than 185 jobs. The part we fit most is the combined circuit breaker and safety switch (RCD), which protects one circuit by itself.
- Power points. More than 185 jobs have included power point work, most often new double power points indoors and weatherproof ones outside.
- Fault finding. More than 225 jobs tracing tripping circuits, dead power points and flickering lights back to the cause.
- Lighting. More than 210 jobs, with LED downlights and new light switches the most common items.
Smoke alarms come next, at more than 100 jobs. Then outdoor power and lighting, safety inspections, appliance connections, TV and data points, ceiling fans, security cameras and EV chargers. By suburb, we are booked most often in Lara, Leopold, Bannockburn, Corio, Highton and Newtown.
What Geelong homes of different ages need
Greater Geelong had more than 120,000 private dwellings at the 2021 Census, and 86.4 per cent were separate houses. The age of the house decides most of what we find. The job counts here are completed jobs since our records began in March 2026.
- The oldest suburbs. Newtown is one of Geelong's oldest suburbs, with land sales from 1839 and many period houses still standing. Lighting, switchboards and fault finding lead our more than 25 Newtown jobs, and several were mains or Powercor defect repairs.
- Post-war suburbs. Housing Commission estates were built in Norlane from 1947 and in Corio from the late 1950s. Energy Safe Victoria advises a wiring check by a licensed electrician once a house passes 30 years, and names an old switchboard with no safety switch as one warning sign. Switchboards and fault finding lead our more than 25 Corio jobs, followed by safety switches and power points, and safety switches lead our more than 15 in Norlane.
- 1970s and later. Leopold was rural until the 1960s and most of its housing dates from the 1970s onward. Our more than 30 Leopold jobs are led by safety switches, switchboards, power points and smoke alarms, which should be replaced every 10 years.
- Newer homes. Where the wiring is recent, people want additions. In Mount Duneed our more than 10 jobs are led by switchboard and safety switch work, extra power points and downlights, with ceiling fans, security cameras and EV chargers too. Armstrong Creek books lighting, safety switches, power points and smoke alarms.
About 28 per cent of Greater Geelong homes are rented, and owners and property managers book us for electrical safety checks and smoke alarm checks in suburbs of every age.

CabledIN Electrical Solutions is based in North Geelong, is open 24 hours, 7 days, and works in every suburb of greater Geelong, as well as the Bellarine Peninsula, the Surf Coast, Golden Plains and Werribee. Booking works the same way wherever you are:
- Call or message. Give us a ring on 1300 025 555, or fill in our contact form with what you need. Tell us what you want done or what has stopped working.
- We book a time. Planned jobs go in the diary on a day that works for you. A fault that is unsafe is treated as an emergency at any hour, 24/7, in every area we cover.
- The electrician looks first. We check the job and the switchboard it connects to.
- You know the price before work begins. Our electrician sets it on site, after looking at the job.
- The work is done and tested. The electrician tests the job before any certificate is written: polarity, insulation resistance, earth continuity, correct circuit connections, fault-loop impedance and whether each safety switch trips.
- You receive your certificate. The last step of each job is your Certificate of Electrical Safety.
Not sure what you need? Tell us what is happening and we will talk it through.
Licensing and your Certificate of Electrical Safety
In Victoria an electrician must work for a Registered Electrical Contractor to do work for a customer, and a contractor must show its registration number in its advertising. Ours is REC 30925. You can check any contractor or electrician on Energy Safe Victoria's public register.
From a single light switch to a new switchboard, the law asks for a Certificate of Electrical Safety on all installation work. There are two types:
- Non-prescribed work covers most home jobs, such as lights, power points, hot water and safety switches. It needs no separate inspection, and your copy is due within 30 days.
- Prescribed work includes consumer mains, the main switchboard and the main earthing system. It must be inspected by an independent licensed electrical inspector, arranged by us, and it cannot be turned on until that inspection is done.
Store your certificates somewhere safe, since the contractor's own copy need only be kept for three years.
Our work also carries a lifetime workmanship warranty, and you can read what customers say in our 2,000+ five-star Google reviews on the reviews page.
24/7 emergency electrician across Geelong
We answer the phone around the clock for faults that cannot wait: a burning smell at the switchboard, sparking, a tingle from a tap or appliance, or power that will not come back. See the emergency electrician Geelong page. In short:
- Life or property at risk, or an electrical fire: call 000. Never use water on an electrical fire.
- Shock or tingle from a tap or appliance: keep your hands off it from then on. Ring Powercor (13 24 12) first and get an electrician to trace the cause afterwards.
- Fallen powerlines or the whole street is out: stay well clear and call Powercor on 13 24 12.
- Only your house is out: check whether a safety switch has tripped and reset it once. If it will not reset, call us.

What customers say
When our electricity issue turned out to be arcing, we called Cabled In and they were fantastic. They managed to fit us in within a good timeframe, and when they were about 10 minutes away they called and offered to pick me up a coffee on their way. It was such a thoughtful gesture and genuinely appreciated during a stressful situation. They took the time to carefully and thoroughly diagnose the issue, explained what they were doing, and used their expertise to resolve the problem properly. The work was completed efficiently, professionally, and exactly as agreed. What stood out most was not only their technical skill, but also their kindness and customer care. It’s lovely to find tradespeople who combine expertise, reliability, and genuine thoughtfulness so well. I would happily and heartily recommend Cabled In to anyone needing an electrician.

Frequently asked questions
Residential electrician Geelong: what should I check before booking?
Ask for the contractor's REC number and look it up on Energy Safe Victoria's public register. Expect to know the price before work starts and to receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety afterwards. CabledIN Electrical Solutions is REC 30925, based in North Geelong.
How do I find an electrician near me in Geelong?
Call CabledIN Electrical Solutions on 1300 025 555 or use the contact form. We are based in North Geelong and work in every suburb of greater Geelong, plus the Bellarine Peninsula, the Surf Coast, Golden Plains and Werribee. Planned work is booked for a day that suits you, and emergencies are attended 24/7.
Is it legal to do your own electrical work in Victoria?
No. Victorian law bans DIY electrical work, even a like-for-like swap of a power point or light fitting. Electrical installation work must be done by a licensed electrician working for a Registered Electrical Contractor.
Does a 1970s house need rewiring?
Not automatically. Once a house is more than 30 years old, Energy Safe Victoria recommends that a licensed electrician check its wiring. Testing shows whether the cable is still sound, and the results decide whether repairs or a rewire are needed.
Do I get a certificate after electrical work?
Yes. Victoria requires a Certificate of Electrical Safety for every piece of electrical installation work, from one power point up to a rewire. Hold on to yours: a contractor is only required to keep a copy for three years.
Do you have a 24/7 emergency electrician in Geelong?
Yes. CabledIN Electrical Solutions takes emergency call-outs 24/7 on 1300 025 555, in every suburb of greater Geelong and across the Bellarine Peninsula, the Surf Coast, Golden Plains and Werribee. If life or property is at risk, call 000 first.
What does Energy Safe Victoria say about testing safety switches?
Quarterly, Energy Safe Victoria says. Press the test button on each safety switch, confirm the power on that circuit goes off, then reset it. Power still on after pressing the button means the switch may have failed, so get a licensed electrician in quickly.
When do smoke alarms need replacing?
Every 10 years, whatever the type. Hard-wired 240 V alarms are licensed-electrician work, for fitting and for replacement alike. Homes built after 1 August 1997 must have mains-powered alarms, and CabledIN replaces them across greater Geelong.
Do you check rented homes as well?
Yes. A licensed electrician from CabledIN checks the switchboards, wiring and fittings of the rented home, and the owner or property manager receives a written report of the results and any repairs needed.
Which Geelong suburbs do you cover?
All of them. CabledIN Electrical Solutions is based in North Geelong and works across greater Geelong, from Lara and Corio in the north to Highton and Mount Duneed in the south, as well as the Bellarine Peninsula, the Surf Coast, Golden Plains and Werribee.
