Fault finding, switchboard upgrades and repairs for Herne Hill homes, by CabledIN

When something electrical stops working, Herne Hill households call CabledIN, a licensed electrician, to find the fault and fix it. The jobs we do most here are fault finding, fuse boards replaced with safety switches, TV mounting, fans and smoke alarms. We are a Registered Electrical Contractor (REC 30925) with more than 20 years' experience.

We find the cause first, then quote the repair. Small repairs can often be done at the same visit. Replacing a switchboard is a bigger job, and the new board is checked by an independent inspector before it is switched on.

What Herne Hill households call us for

Fault finding leads our Herne Hill job list. After that the work is a spread of smaller jobs:

  • Faults. Power points that have stopped working, fans that will not run and circuits that trip.
  • Switchboards. Old fuse boards replaced with circuit breakers and safety switch protection.
  • TV mounting. Wall brackets fitted, with the power extended to the new position.
  • Fans. Exhaust fans and fan speed controllers replaced.
  • Switches, power points and lights. New switch plates, extra power points and light fittings.
  • Smoke alarms. Hard-wired alarms replaced.

Electrician Herne Hill: how a fault gets found

Before you call, these checks are safe:

  • A tripped safety switch can be reset once you have unplugged what was running on that circuit.
  • Ask whether your neighbours still have power. If they do not, call Powercor on 13 24 12.
  • If lights are flickering or dim, or only some rooms have power, leave the switchboard and anything metal alone. Switch off the power points within easy reach and ring Powercor.

On site, the electrician tests from the switchboard out, circuit by circuit, until the fault is found. Sometimes it is the item itself: a fan with a loose or seized part, a worn power point, or an appliance leaking current. Sometimes it is the cable in between. The test results decide the repair, and you get a quote before it goes ahead. Our safety switch tripping guide covers the common causes.

Post-war houses, units and flats

Herne Hill is a residential suburb about 3 km north-west of central Geelong. It saw little housing until after the Second World War, and the 1950s brought its primary school, a technical school and Clonard College.

It also has a lot of flats. Separate houses made up 71.3 per cent of occupied homes at the 2021 Census, flats and apartments 18.6 per cent, and semi-detached houses, terraces and townhouses 9.9 per cent. Herne Hill households are small, averaging 2.1 people, and 38.0 per cent of homes were rented.

Post-war houses are now around 70 years old. Homes of that age can still have an older switchboard with rewireable fuses and no safety switch, and Energy Safe Victoria advises having any house older than 30 years checked by a licensed electrician. In a flat, most of our work is inside the home: power points, lights, fans, smoke alarms and faults.

From old fuses to safety switches

Energy Safe Victoria lists old switchboards, particularly those without a safety switch, among the warning signs that wiring may be faulty. A switchboard upgrade replaces the fuses with circuit breakers and adds safety switch (RCD) protection, and when a switchboard is replaced every final circuit must be protected.

What to expect:

  1. We look at the board and the wiring, and quote the job.
  2. If the supply has to be isolated, the electrician arranges it with Powercor.
  3. The old board comes out and the new one goes in.
  4. A main switchboard is prescribed work, so it has to pass an independent licensed electrical inspector's check before the new board can be switched on.
  5. You receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety for the work.

See switchboard upgrades for more detail.

TV mounting, fans and the smaller jobs

Not every job is a fault. Herne Hill households also book us to:

  • Mount a TV on the wall, with a power point moved or added behind the screen so there is no lead hanging below it. See TV mounting and antenna points.
  • Fix or replace an exhaust fan, or a fan that hums but will not spin. See exhaust fan installation.
  • Replace hard-wired smoke alarms. These must be fitted and replaced by a licensed electrician, and every smoke alarm should be replaced every 10 years.
  • Move a power point or switch, extending the cable through a junction box to the new position.

Not sure what you need? Tell us what is happening and we will talk it through.

Renting in Herne Hill: faults and safety checks

With nearly four in ten Herne Hill homes rented, a good part of our work here is booked by owners and property managers:

  • Faults in rented homes. If you rent and something sparks, trips or stops working, tell the owner or agent straight away and never attempt a repair. They can book us to find and fix it.
  • Smoke alarms. A faulty alarm replaced, or every alarm in the home tested and its date checked.
  • Electrical safety checks. The switchboard, wiring and fittings checked by a licensed electrician, with a written report for the owner or manager.
  • Access. We arrange a time with the household, and quote any repairs before they are done.

Booking a job in Herne Hill

Call us on 1300 025 555, or send a message through the contact form. For a fault, tell us what stopped working, when it started and whether a safety switch tripped.

We book a time that suits you, or treat it as an emergency if the fault is unsafe. The electrician checks the job, you agree the quote, and the work is tested before it is switched on. You then receive your Certificate of Electrical Safety.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an electrician Herne Hill residents can call at night?

Yes. Our emergency line, 1300 025 555, is answered 24/7. If lights are flickering or only part of the house has power, keep away from the switchboard and call Powercor on 13 24 12 first.

Why has one power point stopped working?

It can be the power point itself, a loose connection, or a safety switch or circuit breaker that has tripped on that circuit. Check the switchboard first. If nothing has tripped, the power point needs testing by a licensed electrician, so do not open it.

My exhaust fan hums but will not spin. Can it be fixed?

Sometimes. A fan can stop because a part has worked loose or seized, and freeing it can be enough. If the motor has failed, a replacement fan is usually the better choice. The electrician tests it and tells you which.

Is it time to replace the old fuse box in my Herne Hill house?

Energy Safe Victoria lists old switchboards, especially those without a safety switch, as a warning sign. An electrician can check the board and tell you whether it should be replaced.

Can you mount my TV and hide the power lead?

Yes. We fit the wall bracket and move or add a power point behind the screen, so the lead does not hang below it. We can also add an antenna point at the same time.

I rent a flat in Herne Hill. What do I do about an electrical fault?

Report it to the owner or agent so they can book an electrician. Do not try to fix it yourself. If anything is sparking or hot, keep away from it, and call 000 if there is a fire.

Can I swap a light fitting myself if it is the same type?

No. DIY electrical work is illegal in Victoria, and that includes replacing a light fitting or power point like for like. A licensed electrician does the job and gives you a Certificate of Electrical Safety.
