EV chargers, safety switches and lighting for Winchelsea homes, by CabledIN

CabledIN is a licensed electrician Winchelsea households can book for EV chargers, safety switches, lighting, switchboards and smoke alarms, with 24/7 emergency call-outs. We are a Registered Electrical Contractor (REC 30925) with more than 20 years' experience.

A light or a safety switch is usually one visit, and most home EV chargers are installed in a single visit once the switchboard and supply have been checked. A switchboard upgrade takes longer and is independently inspected. We quote after seeing the job.

Electrician Winchelsea: the work we have done here

Our Winchelsea jobs have covered three kinds of work:

  • EV charging. A home EV charger on its own circuit, with a weatherproof isolating switch beside it. See EV charger installation.
  • Safety switches. Combined circuit breaker and safety switch units (RCBOs) fitted at the switchboard, one per circuit. See safety switch installation.
  • Outdoor lighting for the outside of the house.

Winchelsea homes: an old town centre and newer blocks

Winchelsea is a rural town on the Princes Highway where it crosses the Barwon River, south-west of Geelong. It mixes an older town centre, with heritage buildings from the 1860s and 1870s, and rural-residential blocks developed on the outskirts since the 1970s. At the 2021 Census it had 2,456 people and 1,100 private dwellings, and 94.9 per cent of homes were separate houses.

For the wiring, the age of your own house matters more than the town's. An older house can still have an early switchboard, rewireable fuses and few or no safety switches, and Energy Safe Victoria advises that homes built before the 1980s be checked before moving in. A newer house usually has a modern board, but may still need extra circuits for an EV charger or outdoor power.

EV chargers in Winchelsea

A wall charger draws a large load for hours at a time, so before quoting we check room on the switchboard, the capacity of the supply, and the distance from the board to where the car parks. A typical install includes:

  • a new circuit from the switchboard with its own combined circuit breaker and safety switch;
  • an isolating switch beside the charger, weatherproof outdoors;
  • cable in conduit where it runs along a wall or outside;
  • set-up and testing, then a Certificate of Electrical Safety.

Powercor lists EV chargers among the common reasons to upgrade a home's supply. Only a registered electrical contractor can lodge that request, and we do it for you. Our guide answers whether a normal electrician can install an EV charger.

Safety switches and switchboards

A safety switch (RCD) cuts the power within 0.03 of a second when it detects electricity leaking from a circuit, but it only protects the circuits it is connected to. Where the board has circuit breakers and room, protection can usually be added circuit by circuit, which is the kind of work we have done in Winchelsea.

When a whole board is replaced, every final circuit must have safety switch protection, and an independent inspector checks the new board before the power goes back on to it. Some older boards sit on panels that contain asbestos, mostly installed before 1990, so never drill or cut one. More on switchboard upgrades.

Outdoor lights, power points and fans

Outside, we fit lights rated for outdoor use, sensor lights over paths and driveways, and weatherproof switched power points, so nothing runs off an extension lead. Exposed cable goes in conduit. Inside, we add double power points, replace old fittings with LED lights, and fit ceiling and exhaust fans on their own switches. See outdoor light installation.

Power outages and 24/7 call-outs

Our 24/7 emergency line covers Winchelsea. Work out who to call first:

  • The whole street is dark: a network fault. Report it to Powercor on 13 24 12, or check its live outage map.
  • Only your house: look for a tripped safety switch, unplug what is on that circuit and reset it once. If it trips again or will not reset, call us.
  • A tingle from a tap or appliance: do not touch it. Call Powercor on 13 24 12 straight away, then have an electrician find the cause.
  • Smoke, sparks or fire: call 000.

Smoke alarms and rental checks

Homes built after 1 August 1997 must have 240 V mains-powered alarms with a backup battery, and homes built or substantially renovated after 1 May 2014 that need more than one alarm must have them interconnected. Every alarm should be replaced after 10 years. See smoke alarm installation.

About one Winchelsea home in five is rented (19.5 per cent). Owners and property managers can book an electrical safety check and a smoke alarm check together, so the house is visited once.

How booking works

Call 1300 025 555 or use the contact form. Tell us the job and, for an EV charger, where the car parks and what your switchboard looks like. We check the job, you approve the quote before any work starts, and we test everything we work on. You receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety: within 30 days for work such as lights and safety switches, and shortly after the inspection for a new main switchboard.

Inverleigh, Torquay and the rest of our area

Winchelsea's neighbours include Inverleigh in Golden Plains, and elsewhere in Surf Coast Shire we cover Torquay. For Geelong and everywhere else we work, see the Geelong electrician page.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an electrician Winchelsea residents can call after hours?

Yes. CabledIN takes 24/7 emergency call-outs in Winchelsea on 1300 025 555. If the whole street is out, report it to Powercor on 13 24 12. If anyone is in danger, call 000.

Can you install an EV charger at my Winchelsea home?

Yes. EV charging is one of the jobs we have done in Winchelsea. We check the switchboard, the supply and where the car parks, then quote, and you receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety for the install.

Do I need a new switchboard for an EV charger?

Not always. The charger needs room on the board for its own circuit breaker and safety switch. A full board or an old fuse board usually means switchboard work first, and some homes also need a supply upgrade, which we lodge with Powercor.

What is the difference between a safety switch and a circuit breaker?

A circuit breaker protects the wiring against overloads and short circuits. A safety switch protects people by cutting the power when it detects electricity leaking. An RCBO does both jobs for one circuit.

Why does my safety switch keep tripping?

It has detected a leak, which can come from a faulty appliance, power point or wiring. Unplug everything on that circuit and reset it. If it holds, plug things back in one at a time. If it trips with nothing plugged in, call a licensed electrician.

Is Winchelsea in Surf Coast Shire?

Mostly. The locality is predominantly in Surf Coast Shire, with a small section in Colac Otway Shire. The Victorian electrical rules are the same in both.

Should I get the wiring checked before buying an older house in Winchelsea?

Yes. Energy Safe Victoria advises that homes built before the 1980s be checked before moving in, and that any house over 30 years old have its wiring checked. An electrical safety inspection tells you what needs fixing and what can wait.

When do smoke alarms need replacing?

Every 10 years, whether they are hard-wired or battery powered. Hard-wired 240 V alarms must be replaced by a licensed electrician. Anyone can change a battery.

Can you install outdoor lights at my house?

Yes. Outdoor lighting is one of the jobs we have done in Winchelsea. We use fittings rated for outdoor use and run exposed cable in conduit, and any light that is wired in has to be installed by a licensed electrician.
