Electrician Clifton Springs: one safety switch, or one per circuit?
Older switchboards were often fitted with a single safety switch, or none. Where there is one, it may cover the power points but not the lights or the oven. Energy Safe Victoria is clear that a safety switch only protects the circuits it is connected to, so a board can have one and still leave parts of the house unprotected.
There are two ways to close that gap:
- Add protection to the existing board. A board that already uses circuit breakers, with space left on it, can usually take safety switches one circuit at a time.
- Replace the board. A fuse board, or a board that is already full, is often the one to replace. When a switchboard is replaced, every final circuit must have safety switch protection, so the whole house ends up covered.

Clifton Springs faces north over Corio Bay. A big step in its growth came in 1959, when developers bought 1,300 acres and planned a country club estate of 5,000 house lots. By the 2021 Census the suburb was home to 7,646 people in 3,576 private dwellings, almost all of them separate houses (98.2 per cent of occupied homes).

One more point about older boards: panels, most of them installed before 1990, can contain asbestos, so we check the panel before drilling or cutting it.
Replacing a switchboard: what happens and what gets inspected
- We look first. We check the board, the circuits and anything you want to add, so you know the price before any work starts.
- On the day the power is turned off while the old board comes out and the new one goes in.
- The new board is tested: earthing, insulation resistance, polarity, circuit connections, earth fault-loop impedance and the operation of every safety switch.
- It is independently inspected. Replacing a main switchboard is prescribed work. A licensed electrical inspector, arranged by us, must inspect it, and the power cannot go back on to the new board until that is done.
- A Certificate of Electrical Safety comes to you once the board has passed. File it with the house papers: the contractor is only required to hold its copy for three years.

Smoke alarms and the year your house was built

Can you add safety switches to a Clifton Springs home without a new switchboard?

Why does one safety switch keep cutting power to half my house?
