A fast-growing suburb, and what its homes need
Curlewis has changed quickly. Housing estates began arriving around 2010, and between the 2016 and 2021 Censuses the population more than doubled, to 4,175. The council's Jetty Road growth area, on the western edge of Drysdale, Clifton Springs and Curlewis, is adding more: a planning amendment completed in 2025 rezoned farming and rural-living land there for housing.
Not everyone is in a new estate. The council notes that many residents still live on 2 to 5 acre blocks. At the 2021 Census, 99.1 per cent of occupied homes were separate houses, the median age was 34 and the average household had 2.7 people.
Powercor notes that safety switches are mandatory in new Victorian homes, so a newer Curlewis house should already have them on its switchboard. Our calls here are mostly about adding what the builder did not: more power points, TV and data points, outdoor lighting and, in time, an EV charger.
The work we do most in Curlewis
- Extra power points. Power point work runs through our Curlewis jobs: double outlets added where the plans had too few, and standard power points swapped for ones with USB charging.
- TV installation. TVs mounted on the wall, with the power and antenna points recessed behind the screen.
- Data cabling. Network cable and data outlets, including fixing existing Ethernet connections.
- Smaller jobs. A bathroom exhaust fan, lighting, outdoor power, a safety switch, a switchboard service and a fault-finding call.

Electrician Curlewis: TV wall mounting with hidden cables
TV work is a regular Curlewis job. The usual setup: the bracket is fixed to the wall frame or brickwork, a power point and an antenna point go in behind the screen, and the cables run inside the wall to a recessed plate, so nothing hangs below the TV.
A tilting bracket suits a TV mounted higher on the wall; a flat bracket suits one at eye level. See TV wall mounting for bracket choices and walls.

Why do Curlewis homes need more power and data points?
Because Curlewis households are younger than those in Leopold, Clifton Springs or Drysdale. At the 2021 Census the median age in Curlewis was 34, against 41 in Leopold, 48 in Clifton Springs and 52 in Drysdale, and the average household had 2.7 people. More people at home means more phones, laptops, screens and consoles to plug in and connect, and a house can easily be built with fewer power and data points than that.
Our Curlewis jobs show it: most included new power points, and the rest of the list is USB power points, wall-mounted TVs and repairs to network cabling. Cat6 is a network cable that carries a wired internet connection from the modem to a room, and a wired point suits a TV, a games console or a desk where a steady connection matters.
We run the cable to the rooms that need it, label and test each point, and add a power point beside it where there is none. See data and network cabling.

Renting out a Curlewis home: the checks we do
About three in ten Curlewis homes are rented (30.4 per cent at the 2021 Census), a higher share than in Leopold, Drysdale, Clifton Springs, Ocean Grove or Barwon Heads. If you own one, this is the work owners book us for:
- Electrical safety check: the switchboards, wiring and fittings checked by a licensed electrician, with a written report for your records.
- Smoke alarms: every alarm tested, and its manufacture date read, on the same visit if you want.
- Safety switches: protection added to power and lighting circuits that do not have it, or a switchboard upgrade where the board is too old to take it.
- Access and repairs: we arrange a time with the household or through your property manager, and price any repairs before doing them.

Frequently asked questions
Our new Curlewis house has too few power points. Can you add more?
Yes, and it is the job we do most in Curlewis. We add double power points where you need them, check the switchboard has room for any new circuit, and test everything before we leave.
Can you change a power point to one with USB chargers?
Yes. It is usually a straight swap, but it is still electrical work: in Victoria it has to be done by a licensed electrician, and you receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety for it.
Electrician Curlewis: can you hide TV cables inside the wall?
Yes. We put a power point and an antenna point behind the screen and run the cables inside the wall to a recessed plate, so nothing hangs below the TV. The new power point is electrical installation work, so it is tested and comes with a certificate.
Can you add data points to a Curlewis house that has none?
Yes. We run Cat6 network cable from the modem to the rooms that need a wired connection, such as behind the TV, at a desk or beside a games console, then label and test each point. A power point can go in beside it on the same visit.
I rent out a house in Curlewis. Can you check the electrics?
Yes. A licensed electrician looks over the switchboard, wiring and fittings, tests every safety switch and smoke alarm, and the owner or property manager receives a written report. Any repair is priced first and only done once you agree to it.
Do newer homes need interconnected smoke alarms?
Yes, if the house was built or substantially renovated after 1 May 2014 and needs more than one alarm: those alarms must be interconnected, so one going off sets off the rest. The Curlewis population more than doubled between 2016 and 2021, so many of its homes were built after that date. Whatever the age of the house, replace each alarm when it reaches 10 years old.
Can you replace a bathroom exhaust fan?
Yes. We replace bathroom exhaust fans and install new ones in Curlewis homes, including the wiring and the wall switch, and test the circuit before we leave. You receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety for the new fan and its wiring.
