Electrician Bell Park: power points, switches and lights

Bell Park work in our records is mostly about making an existing house easier to live in:

  • Power points in about three of every four Bell Park jobs: single outlets swapped for doubles, and new ones added in kitchens, bedrooms and living areas.
  • Lighting in about two of every three: new light switches, LED ceiling lights in place of older fittings, dimmers and LED batten lights.
  • Switchboard and safety switch work in about one in three.
  • Ceiling fans and smoke alarms, each in about one job in four.
  • Also: outdoor power, bathroom exhaust fans, electrical inspections, electric hot water, a security camera and a data point.

Bell Park houses, built from the 1950s

Bell Park sits north-west of central Geelong, between North Geelong and Bell Post Hill. Houses went up there from the 1950s, and early owners often built a simple bungalow first and added to it later.

That history matters for the wiring. A house that grew in stages can have rooms wired at different times, with the newer circuits added to an older switchboard. An older board can still have rewireable fuses and few or no safety switches. Energy Safe Victoria lists old switchboards, particularly those without a safety switch, among the tell-tale signs of faulty wiring, along with old or broken switches and power points, flickering lights and sparks.

At the 2021 Census Bell Park had 5,602 residents. Four in five homes are separate houses (80.7 per cent), and 40.4 per cent are owned outright, well above the Victorian figure of 32.2 per cent. Our job records fit that picture: most Bell Park work is upgrading houses people already live in.

More power points in an older Bell Park house

Older houses were wired for far fewer appliances than most households run today, which is why power points are the job we do most here. Common requests:

  • A double power point in place of a single, so a kitchen bench or bedside no longer needs a power board.
  • New power points where the furniture has moved, in a study, or beside the bed.
  • Weatherproof power points outside, for the barbecue, garden tools or the shed.

Before quoting, we check whether the new outlet can join an existing circuit or needs its own, and whether the switchboard has room. Any circuit we add gets safety switch protection. A power point is non-prescribed work, so it needs no independent inspection, and you receive your Certificate of Electrical Safety within 30 days.

New switches, dimmers and LED ceiling lights

Lighting comes up in about two of every three Bell Park jobs, and much of it is renewing what is already there:

  • Light switches. Old or broken switches replaced with new switch plates, including plates with two or three switches side by side. Energy Safe Victoria counts old or broken switches among the signs that wiring may be faulty.
  • LED ceiling lights. Slim, round LED fittings in place of old ceiling lights, in sizes from a hallway to a living room.
  • Dimmers matched to the LED fitting they control. Not every LED light is made to dim, so we pair the two.
  • Batten lights for a garage, laundry or workshop.

See lighting installation for the options and how a lighting job runs.

When the switchboard needs attention

About one Bell Park job in three involves the switchboard or its safety switches. The common reasons: the board has no room for a new circuit, or it is an older board with rewireable fuses and few safety switches. There are two ways forward:

  • Add safety switch protection circuit by circuit, using combined circuit breaker and safety switch units, where the board already has circuit breakers and the space to take them.
  • Replace the switchboard. A new main switchboard is prescribed work: an independent licensed electrical inspector, arranged by us, must check it before power is restored to the new board. Every final circuit on the new board must have safety switch protection.

Older switchboard panels can contain asbestos, typically black or dark brown backing boards, most installed before 1990, so never drill or cut one. Our guide do I need to upgrade my switchboard? goes through the signs and the current standard.

Ceiling fans, outdoor power and smoke alarms

Each of these turns up in about one Bell Park job in four:

  • Ceiling fans, often with a light kit, fitted where a ceiling light was, on the existing switch or a new one.
  • Outdoor power and lights: weatherproof power points and lights for the yard, the carport and the shed.
  • Smoke alarms. Homes built after 1 August 1997 must have 240 V mains-powered alarms with a backup battery, and every alarm, of any type, should be replaced every 10 years. Only a licensed electrician can install or replace a hard-wired alarm.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an after-hours electrician Bell Park homes can call?

Yes. CabledIN takes 24/7 emergency call-outs in Bell Park on 1300 025 555. If the whole street is out, call Powercor on 13 24 12. Call 000 for a fire or if someone is hurt.

Can you change a single power point to a double in my Bell Park house?

Yes, and power points are the job we do most in Bell Park. Even a like-for-like swap is electrical installation work, so in Victoria it must be done by a licensed electrician, and you receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety.

My Bell Park house was extended in stages. Does that matter for the wiring?

It can. Rooms added at different times may be wired differently and may all run back to an older switchboard. An electrical inspection shows how each part of the house is wired and protected, and what needs attention.

Should I replace old or broken light switches?

Yes. Energy Safe Victoria lists old or broken switches and power points among the tell-tale signs that home wiring may be faulty. Replacing them is a job for a licensed electrician, who tests the circuit at the same time.

Can you put a dimmer on my LED lights?

Usually, if the light is made to dim. The dimmer has to suit the LED fitting, or the light may not dim smoothly. We check the fittings and fit a matching dimmer, or suggest dimmable fittings.

Do I need a new switchboard to add power points?

Not always. If the board has room and the new outlet can join a suitable circuit, the board can stay. If it is full, or has no safety switch protection to extend, it may need work first, and we tell you that when we quote.

Do you install ceiling fans in Bell Park?

Yes. Ceiling fans come up in about one Bell Park job in four, usually a fan with a light kit fitted where a ceiling light was, wired to the existing switch or a new one.

Should the wiring in an older Bell Park house be checked?

Yes. Energy Safe Victoria advises a wiring check by a licensed electrician for any house over 30 years old, and checking homes built before the 1980s before moving in. An inspection tests the switchboard and circuits and reports what needs fixing.
