Defect notices, supply upgrades and 24/7 call-outs for Sutherlands Creek homes, by CabledIN

Any electrician Sutherlands Creek home owners hire must be licensed and work for a registered electrical contractor, because DIY electrical work is illegal in Victoria. CabledIN is one, registered as REC 30925, with more than 20 years' experience; Sutherlands Creek is within our 24/7 emergency call-out area on 1300 025 555.

On a rural property, many questions come down to which part of the supply is whose.

A small rural locality of Golden Plains Shire

Sutherlands Creek is a small rural locality of Golden Plains Shire, near Geelong, postcode 3331, with 129 residents and 40 private dwellings at the 2021 Census. The ABS publishes nothing on the type or age of homes in an area this small.

From Powercor's network to your switchboard: who owns what

Golden Plains sits within Powercor's network area; Powercor's online distributor finder confirms any single address.

  1. The network. Powercor's assets: the poles, the overhead wires and the underground services.
  2. The point of supply. Where Powercor's service line joins your installation, ownership passes to you.
  3. Your side. The consumer mains, meter box and switchboard are the owner's. Work on consumer mains, or a new main switchboard, cannot be switched on until an independent inspector has checked it.

A registered electrical contractor does the work on your side and lodges any application with Powercor.

Electrician Sutherlands Creek: answering a Powercor defect notice

A defect notice says part of your own installation is unsafe or non-compliant, and the fix is the owner's. Powercor's common findings sit where the power arrives: a loose or missing service hook, a faulty fused mains box, a meter box with no door, broken hinges or no weatherproofing, a damaged switchboard, or trees on your land near the service line.

The notice states the deadline. A registered electrical contractor repairs the fault and sends Powercor the Certificate of Electrical Safety, a compliance declaration follows, and any reconnection is free. See our defect notice guide and defect repairs.

Private power lines: upkeep, and when a rebuild goes underground

If the poles and wires carrying power across your land to the house are privately owned, they form a private electric line. Its upkeep and tree clearance fall to the owner, and any work on it is for a registered electrical contractor only.

In a Hazardous Bushfire Risk Area, a private line needing more than 20 per cent of its poles or spans repaired or replaced must go underground, unless an alternative compliance applies, so check your address before planning the work. That means a new point of supply through Powercor's mySupply portal. An urgent repair in a bushfire risk area needs a written undertaking to go underground within 60 days.

Three-phase, more capacity or an underground service

An EV charger or new appliances may call for a supply upgrade, which only a registered electrical contractor can request:

  • Alterations go through Powercor's eConnect portal: single-phase to three-phase, more capacity, a new meter panel, or overhead to underground where the same pole allows. Powercor's typical timeframe is three to eight weeks.
  • Network upgrades go through mySupply when the network cannot carry the change. For a new pit, Powercor says it makes an offer within 20 business days, you have 30 days to accept, and installation usually follows 6 to 10 weeks after that.

Safety switches and smoke alarms: what they cover

Each safety switch (RCD) guards only the circuits wired through it, shutting them off within 0.03 of a second when it detects a dangerous leak. A replacement switchboard must give every final sub-circuit that protection. See safety switches.

The legal minimum for smoke alarms is one on each storey and one separating every sleeping area from the rest of the home; fire services suggest bedrooms, hallways and living areas too. Since 1 May 2014, any home built or substantially renovated that needs two or more alarms must have them interconnected, and 240 V alarms are a licensed electrician's job. See smoke alarms.

Power off? Find out whose side the fault is on

  • The area is out: it is Powercor's network. Check its live outage map or ring 13 24 12.
  • Only your house: push a dropped safety switch back up one time. If it will not hold, or the network is up and you are not, the fault is probably on your side.
  • Dim lights, or half the house dead: leave the switchboard and all metal alone and phone Powercor.
  • A line on the ground: treat it as live and keep everyone 10 metres or more away, report it on 13 24 12 and call 000 if someone is in danger.

Your side is ours, with emergency call-outs in Sutherlands Creek 24/7.

Frequently asked questions

Electrician Sutherlands Creek: is there 24/7 help?

Yes, day and night, every day of the year, on 1300 025 555. With fire or an injury, 000 is the first call.

Sutherlands Creek or Moorabool: which council is which?

Sutherlands Creek is in Golden Plains Shire, while next-door Moorabool is in the City of Greater Geelong.

Who owns the poles on a Sutherlands Creek property?

Network poles are Powercor's. Poles carrying a private electric line to the house are the owner's to maintain.

Must a damaged private line in Sutherlands Creek go underground?

Only after substantial reconstruction (more than 20 per cent of its poles or spans) in a Hazardous Bushfire Risk Area, unless an alternative compliance applies.

How long does a supply upgrade take for a Sutherlands Creek home?

Three to eight weeks for most alterations, Powercor says, longer if appointments are missed; a new pit takes longer.

Does replacing a fused mains box need an inspector?

No, if one box is swapped like for like, because that is not prescribed work. A Certificate of Electrical Safety is still required.

We have one safety switch. Is every circuit covered?

Only if every circuit is wired through it, and even then no safety switch stops every possible shock.

Can Powercor cut the power for a fault that keeps returning?

Yes, for persistent faults, short circuits or suspected equipment problems: ring 13 24 12. A licensed electrician then traces why it keeps happening.
