Which Bellarine Peninsula towns do we cover?

All of them. Each town below has its own page with its local jobs, housing history and common questions.

  • Leopold: the largest town at the Geelong end, and the busiest Bellarine town in our records.
  • Curlewis: housing estates from about 2010 beside larger rural-living blocks.
  • Drysdale: a farming township until the 1950s, now joined to Clifton Springs.
  • Clifton Springs: on Corio Bay, next to Drysdale.
  • Portarlington: a bayside township on the north-east side.
  • Indented Head: between Portarlington and St Leonards, looking east over Port Phillip Bay.
  • St Leonards: the next township along the bay from Indented Head.
  • Queenscliff: surveyed in 1853, at the south-eastern tip.
  • Ocean Grove: the most populous town on the peninsula at the 2021 Census.
  • Barwon Heads: beside the mouth of the Barwon River.

Point Lonsdale, Wallington and Moolap are in our records too. They have no page of their own, so the nearest town's page applies.

What are homes on the Bellarine Peninsula like?

Mostly separate houses, with most of the growth from the 1960s on. Public records trace the pattern town by town:

PeriodWhat the records show
1850sQueenscliff's township is surveyed in 1853
1950sDrysdale starts to grow beyond a farming township; the Clifton Springs country club estate is planned in 1959 with 5,000 house lots
1960s to 1980sLeopold's population doubles between 1961 and 1971, then again by 1981; St Leonards grows steadily from the 1960s; Portarlington grows as a retirement area after the 1960s; Ocean Grove has a building boom in the 1970s and 80s
2010 onHousing estates arrive in Curlewis, with the Jetty Road growth area adding more

At the 2021 Census, more than nine in ten occupied homes in Leopold, Ocean Grove, Clifton Springs and Curlewis were separate houses. Energy Safe Victoria advises a wiring check for any house more than 30 years old, which takes in every home from those 1960s to 1980s waves.

Census night also found many dwellings empty in the bayside towns. The ABS counted 51.5 per cent of private dwellings in Indented Head as unoccupied, 44.8 per cent in St Leonards and 40.0 per cent in Queenscliff. The pages for those towns, and for Barwon Heads, cover what to check in a house left empty for weeks.

Which electrical jobs come up most on the peninsula?

Our job records hold more than 85 jobs on the Bellarine Peninsula. Leopold accounts for more than 30 of them, Ocean Grove more than 15 and Clifton Springs more than 10, and the rest are spread from Portarlington and Curlewis to Point Lonsdale. Six kinds of work lead, close together:

  • Safety switches. A safety switch, or RCD (residual current device), cuts the power when it detects leakage that could harm a person.
  • Lighting, inside and out.
  • Switchboard upgrades and repairs.
  • Power points, mostly extra ones.
  • Fault finding, when part of the house loses power or a switch keeps tripping.
  • Smoke alarms, mostly replacements.

After those come outdoor power and lights, electrical inspections, power to sheds and granny flats, and surge protection.

Electrician Bellarine Peninsula: are call-outs available 24/7?

Yes. CabledIN is open 24 hours, 7 days, and our emergency call-outs reach every town on the peninsula at any hour. A few checks are safe to make before you call:

  • The switchboard. If a safety switch has tripped, unplug what was running and try resetting it. One that trips again straight away, or will not reset at all, needs an electrician to find the cause.
  • The street. If the neighbours have no power either, it is most likely a network outage for Powercor, the distributor for the Bellarine, to fix.
  • Fallen lines. Treat a fallen powerline as live, stay well away from it and call 000 if anyone's life is at risk.

Anything beyond those checks is work for a licensed electrician. Our emergency electrician page covers after-hours faults in more detail.

How does booking work, from Leopold to Queenscliff?

  1. Ring 1300 025 555, or send the contact form, with your town and a line about the job or the fault.
  2. Pick a time. Routine jobs go in the diary; anything unsafe is handled as an emergency.
  3. The electrician looks first. The price is settled with you before anything is touched.
  4. The work is done and tested. The tests required before a certificate include earthing, insulation resistance, polarity and safety switch operation.
  5. You get a Certificate of Electrical Safety (COES). It is the legal document for the work, and Energy Safe Victoria receives a copy too.

Living at the far end of the peninsula does not change any of this. The same team and the same steps apply in Queenscliff as in Leopold.

Not sure what you need? Tell us what is happening and we will talk it through.

Do you run power to sheds and garages on larger Bellarine blocks?

Yes. Larger lots are common in parts of the peninsula; in Curlewis, the council says, many residents still live on 2 to 5 acre blocks. Our records include shed and garage jobs in Drysdale, Leopold and Ocean Grove.

A detached building needs a cable run, underground or overhead, and often a sub-board: a small switchboard in the building, fed from the main one. Before any trench deeper than 300 mm is dug, Energy Safe Victoria says Before You Dig Australia (BYDA) must be contacted. Our shed, garage and granny flat power page covers the route, sub-boards and costs in full.

Which council covers a Bellarine address?

Two councils share the peninsula. Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale make up the Borough of Queenscliffe, the smaller of the two. Everything else, from Leopold and Curlewis to Portarlington, Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads, is in the City of Greater Geelong.

Planning and building questions, such as whether a new granny flat or studio needs a permit, go to your council. Electrical work follows the same state rules in both: it must be done by a licensed electrician working for a registered electrical contractor, and all electrical installation work needs a Certificate of Electrical Safety.

Frequently asked questions

Does your electrician Bellarine Peninsula service include nights and weekends?

Yes. CabledIN Electrical Solutions is open 24 hours, 7 days, and takes emergency call-outs in every Bellarine town, from Leopold and Curlewis to Queenscliff, Point Lonsdale and Barwon Heads. Call 1300 025 555. If a powerline is down, stay well away from it and call 000 if anyone's life is at risk.

Which Bellarine towns have their own page?

Ten do: Leopold, Curlewis, Drysdale, Clifton Springs, Portarlington, Indented Head, St Leonards, Queenscliff, Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. Each covers that town's housing, our local jobs and common questions. Point Lonsdale, Wallington and Moolap have no page of their own, but our records include jobs there too.

How many jobs have you done on the Bellarine Peninsula?

Our job records hold more than 85 jobs across the peninsula. Leopold has the most, with more than 30, then Ocean Grove with more than 15 and Clifton Springs with more than 10. Safety switches, lighting, switchboards, power points, fault finding and smoke alarms make up most of the work.

Is CabledIN based on the Bellarine?

No. We are based in North Geelong and cover every Bellarine town from there, with the same team and the same 24/7 emergency call-outs. The peninsula is one part of a service area that takes in greater Geelong, the Bellarine Peninsula, the Surf Coast, Golden Plains and Werribee.

Which council do I ask about a granny flat on the Bellarine?

It depends on the address. Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale are in the Borough of Queenscliffe, and the rest of the peninsula is in the City of Greater Geelong. Ask your council about permits for the building itself. The electrical side needs a licensed electrician and a Certificate of Electrical Safety.

How old does a Bellarine house have to be before the wiring is checked?

Energy Safe Victoria says any house more than 30 years old should have its wiring checked, and much of the peninsula was built between the 1960s and the 1980s. An electrical safety inspection looks at the switchboard, safety switches, wiring and smoke alarms, and shows you what needs attention first.

Can you replace an old switchboard in a Bellarine home?

Yes, switchboards are among the jobs we do most on the peninsula. Because a new main switchboard counts as prescribed work, power cannot go onto it until an independent licensed electrical inspector has checked it. On the replacement board, each final sub-circuit has to be protected by a safety switch.

Do you work in Point Lonsdale?

Yes, and our records include jobs there. Point Lonsdale is the Borough of Queenscliffe's second town, and the Queenscliff page is the nearest match for it. The same booking steps, 24/7 emergency call-outs and Certificate of Electrical Safety apply there as everywhere else we work.

How do I book an electrician on the Bellarine Peninsula?

Phone 1300 025 555 at any hour, or send the contact form with your town and a line about the job. Routine work is booked ahead and anything unsafe is handled as an emergency. The electrician sees the job first, and the price is agreed before work begins.
