Power for sheds, safety switch checks and smoke alarms in Moorabool, by CabledIN

This electrician Moorabool page is for the small rural locality north-west of Geelong, by the Moorabool River valley, in the City of Greater Geelong. CabledIN offers it every home service we provide, from switchboards, safety switches and smoke alarms to power for sheds, with 24/7 emergency call-outs. We hold Registered Electrical Contractor licence REC 30925, backed by more than 20 years' experience.

Swapping a light fitting or adding a power point rarely needs a second trip. Power to a building away from the house depends on the distance and the switchboard, so we quote after seeing it.

Moorabool: pasture and vineyard country near Geelong

Moorabool sits in the City of Greater Geelong's You Yangs ward, between Batesford and Anakie. The council describes it as flat pasture country bordered by a fertile river valley, the valley where the region's winemaking revival began.

At the 2021 Census it had 94 people in 36 private dwellings, a median age of 40 and an average household of 2.5. The ABS publishes no breakdown of home types for an area this small, but homes here are few and spread out, and that shapes the work below.

Electrician Moorabool: power for sheds and outbuildings

Power in a shed, garage or carport away from the house needs its own circuit from the switchboard. Four questions set the job and the price:

  1. Is there room on the board? A full board, or one still on fuses, may need work first.
  2. How far is it? A longer run needs heavier cable to deliver full power at the far end.
  3. Which way will the cable go? We plan the route before quoting, and exposed cable outside runs in conduit.
  4. What will run out there? A few lights and a power point ask far less than heavy power tools.

We give the new circuit safety switch protection, use weatherproof fittings where they are exposed, and test and certify the work. See power point installation.

Generators, tingles and other urgent problems

  • Generators. A generator must never be connected to the house wiring, as Energy Safe Victoria warns. Having one wired into your installation properly is prescribed work, independently inspected, so talk to a licensed electrician before you rely on a generator in an outage.
  • A tingle or small shock from a tap, shower or appliance. Leave it alone and keep out of that area. Ring your distributor's faults line at once (Powercor's is 13 24 12; your bill names yours). A licensed electrician can then track down the cause.
  • An electrical fire. Never use water. If the switchboard is safe to reach, cut the power there. A dry chemical extinguisher or fire blanket only suits a fire that is still small; if it has spread, leave the house and call 000.
  • Sparks from a power point, switch or the switchboard are a warning sign Energy Safe Victoria names. Stop using it and call us: emergency call-outs are available in Moorabool day and night.

What a Moorabool home typically needs: three checks

The house itself is the best guide:

  1. Open the switchboard door. A switch with a test button and a 30 mA marking is a safety switch (RCD). If you see only fuses or plain circuit breakers, nothing on the board protects people from a shock, and Energy Safe Victoria names an old board without a safety switch as a warning sign. See safety switches.
  2. Work out roughly when the house was built. Past 30, Energy Safe Victoria suggests a licensed electrician check the wiring. An electrical safety inspection sorts the urgent repairs from the ones you can plan for.
  3. Read the date on each smoke alarm. Replace any alarm at 10 years. Any house built after 1 August 1997 needs mains-powered (240 V) alarms that also have a backup battery.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the Moorabool you cover?

The rural locality north-west of Geelong, in the City of Greater Geelong. It borders Batesford, Bell Post Hill, Anakie and Sutherlands Creek.

Electrician Moorabool: can I get help after hours?

Yes. Ring 1300 025 555 whenever it happens, including weekends. For fire, smoke or anyone hurt, call 000 first.

What affects the cost of running power to a shed?

The distance from the switchboard, whether the board has room for another circuit, the route the cable takes, and what you plan to run out there. We look at all four and give you a price before starting.

What is the safe way to use a generator in a blackout?

Never connect it to the house wiring, as Energy Safe Victoria warns. If you want one wired in so it can run the house, that is prescribed work with an independent inspection, so speak to a licensed electrician first.

My tap gave me a tingle. Who do I call?

Your distributor's faults line first: Powercor's is 13 24 12, any time. Leave the tap alone, keep everyone out of that room, and have a licensed electrician find the cause later.

My switchboard has no test buttons. Should I worry?

It probably means there is no safety switch. A fuse or circuit breaker guards the cables against overload; a safety switch cuts the power fast enough to protect a person. Where the board has circuit breakers and space, adding safety switches may be all it needs.

When is a smoke alarm too old?

At 10 years, whether it runs on a battery or is hard-wired. A hard-wired one has to be changed by a licensed electrician.

Do you also cover Batesford and Anakie?

Yes, along with Bell Post Hill, Sutherlands Creek and the rest of Geelong.
