Electrician South Geelong: a small suburb of cottages and terraces
South Geelong is one of the smallest suburbs we cover: 1,014 residents and 482 private dwellings at the 2021 Census. It sits immediately south of the railway line from Geelong station, with the Barwon River along its southern edge, and it has been lived in for a long time. Its primary school opened in 1879.
The City of Greater Geelong describes the residential area as "mostly small cottages, flats and terrace houses". The Census agrees: 68.1 per cent of occupied dwellings are separate houses, against 86.4 per cent across Greater Geelong, and 30.2 per cent are semi-detached, terrace or townhouse homes. What older cottages and terraces can need
Once a house is more than 30 years old, Energy Safe Victoria wants its wiring looked at by a licensed electrician. Its warning signs include an old switchboard, above all one without a safety switch (RCD), as well as old or broken switches and power points and flickering lights. Older homes like South Geelong's cottages and terraces can have:
- A switchboard with rewireable fuses, or one safety switch on the power points and none on the lights.
- Too few power points, with power boards and extension leads filling the gap.
- Smoke alarms past their 10-year life.
Protection stops at the circuits a safety switch is wired to. If your board already has circuit breakers in good order, protection can usually be added circuit by circuit. A fuse board, or one with no space left, is usually better replaced with a new switchboard, and a replacement main switchboard must be inspected by an independent licensed electrical inspector before the power goes back on. Older panels can contain asbestos, so leave the board alone and tell us the age of the house when you call.

Ten years is the working life of any alarm, whatever powers it, and a hard-wired one may only be fitted or replaced by a licensed electrician. Why does the same job take longer in one South Geelong house than another?

Electrician South Geelong: will you come out for one power point?
Yes. A single power point, one safety switch or a smoke alarm is a job worth booking, and the electrician can look over the switchboard while there. Even the smallest installation job comes with its own Certificate of Electrical Safety, which Victoria requires.
My South Geelong cottage still has old fuses. Should the switchboard be replaced?
Old fuses on their own do not decide it, but Energy Safe Victoria does treat an old board with no safety switch as a sign the wiring may be faulty. We check the board and tell you whether safety switches can be added or whether a new board is the better choice.
Is a new switchboard needed before safety switches go in?
Often not. If the board has circuit breakers in good condition, safety switch protection can usually be added to each circuit. If it has fuses or no room, a new board is usually the better fix, and it must be inspected before the power goes back on.
Can you add safety switches to a rented terrace in South Geelong?

My safety switch keeps tripping. What should I do?
Switch off and unplug what is running on that circuit, then try the safety switch again. A switch that will not stay on, or trips repeatedly, needs a licensed electrician to test the circuit. Repeated tripping is a reason, Powercor says, to have both the wiring and the appliances inspected.
How do I check that an electrician is licensed?
Search Energy Safe Victoria's public register for the contractor's registration number. Ours is REC 30925, and a registered contractor must include its number in its advertising. It is also fine to ask to see the electrician's licence card before work starts.
