EV chargers, safety switches and power points for Mount Duneed homes, by CabledIN

Mount Duneed households book CabledIN, their local electrician, for EV chargers, safety switches and extra power points, inside and out. We have done more than 15 jobs in Mount Duneed, and about a third of them were EV charger installations. Our electrical contractor registration number is REC 30925.

A power point or safety switch is usually one short visit. An EV charger takes longer, and its price depends on the distance from the switchboard, whether the board has room and whether the supply needs an upgrade. We quote after seeing the home.

EV chargers: a third of our Mount Duneed work

About one Mount Duneed job in three has been an EV charger installation. The installs follow a consistent pattern:

  • a new circuit from the switchboard, protected by its own combined circuit breaker and safety switch
  • a weatherproof isolating switch near the charger, so it can be turned off where it is
  • the charger itself, either one we supply or one you have already bought
  • testing, then a Certificate of Electrical Safety, because an EV charger is electrical installation work like any other

We have fitted chargers to both single-phase and three-phase homes in the suburb. On a three-phase home the circuit and the isolating switch are three-phase as well.

What changes the cost of an EV charger in Mount Duneed

Three things decide how simple an install is, and the electrician checks all three before quoting:

  1. Switchboard space. We put the charger on a circuit of its own. If the board has no spare space, a sub-board or a larger switchboard comes first, and that is the biggest change to the price.
  2. The supply. Powercor, the electricity distributor for the Geelong region, lists EV chargers as a common reason to upgrade a home's supply, and a high-capacity charger may need a network upgrade. We lodge the request. Powercor says most supply alterations take 3 to 8 weeks, so it pays to ask before the car arrives.
  3. The cable run. The distance from the switchboard to where the car parks, and what the cable has to pass through, sets the time on site.

Electrician Mount Duneed: the rest of the job list

Two jobs tie for the top of our Mount Duneed records, each appearing in nearly half of them:

  • Safety switches, mostly a combined circuit breaker and safety switch for each new circuit.
  • Power points: extra double power points indoors, recessed outlets behind wall-mounted TVs, and weatherproof single and double outlets outside.

After those come lighting (LED downlights and switches), outdoor power, switchboard work including three-phase protection, and fault finding, which has included an after-hours call-out. Ceiling fans, TV wall mounting, security cameras and data points round out the list, each a regular request.

From farming district to family suburb

Mount Duneed was subdivided for small farms in the 1850s and stayed a small rural locality, about 10 km south of central Geelong, for a very long time: in 1961 it had 126 residents. Residential subdivisions came later, on the Geelong side in the Armstrong Creek development zone. Geelong Airport, once in the locality, closed in 2011 and its land was developed for housing.

At the 2021 Census Mount Duneed had 6,182 residents and 2,377 private dwellings. Separate houses made up 97.0 per cent of homes, the median age was 32 and the average household was 2.8 people. In plain terms: family homes, many of them recent, alongside land that is still rural.

Our job list fits that picture. Newer homes seldom need rewiring. What they need is more: chargers, outdoor power, extra power points, and safety switch protection on every circuit that gets added.

Two councils, one set of electrical rules

Mount Duneed is divided between the City of Greater Geelong and Surf Coast Shire. For electrical work that makes no difference. The rules come from Victorian law and Energy Safe Victoria, and they are the same on both sides of the boundary:

  • Electrical work for a customer must be done by a licensed electrician working for a Registered Electrical Contractor.
  • Every installation job, however small, comes with a Certificate of Electrical Safety.
  • Prescribed work, such as replacing the main switchboard or the consumer mains, must be inspected by an independent licensed electrical inspector before it is switched on.

Just under a quarter of Mount Duneed homes were rented at the 2021 Census (23.0 per cent), and owners and property managers on both sides of the boundary book the same electrical safety checks with us.

Faults, tripping and after-hours calls

We take 24/7 emergency call-outs in Mount Duneed. A few safe checks first:

  • Ask a neighbour. If their power is off as well, the fault is on the network side, and Powercor takes those calls on 13 24 12.
  • If yours is the only home without power, go to the switchboard, unplug the appliances on the circuit that tripped and reset its safety switch. If it will not reset, or trips again, call us.
  • For a tingle from a tap or appliance, keep clear of it and call Powercor on 13 24 12 straight away. For fire, call 000.

Do not open the switchboard beyond its switches. Our guide on why a safety switch keeps tripping explains the usual causes.

Services available in Mount Duneed

Booking an electrician in Mount Duneed

Call 1300 025 555. For a charger, tell us the car and the charger if you have chosen them, and send a photo of the switchboard. For anything else, tell us what you want added or what has stopped working.

We book a time that suits you. On the day the electrician checks the switchboard first, confirms the job and gives you the price before starting. Every new circuit is tested before it is switched on, and you then receive your Certificate of Electrical Safety. For work such as power points, lights and safety switches, your copy is due within 30 days.

Neighbouring suburbs

Mount Duneed borders Armstrong Creek, which was carved partly out of its old farmland, and Waurn Ponds. To the south it meets Torquay. We also work in Grovedale, Charlemont, Connewarre and Freshwater Creek. For the whole region, see our residential electrician Geelong page.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to install an EV charger in Mount Duneed?

It depends on the charger, the distance from the switchboard to the parking spot, whether the board has room and whether the supply needs upgrading. We quote once we have seen the switchboard and where the car parks.

Can you install an EV charger on a single-phase home?

Yes. We have installed chargers on single-phase and three-phase homes in Mount Duneed. The electrician checks the supply and the switchboard first, and if Powercor needs to upgrade the supply, we lodge the request.

Do I get a certificate for an EV charger installation?

Yes. An EV charger installation is electrical installation work, and a Certificate of Electrical Safety must be provided for all electrical installation work in Victoria.

Which council is Mount Duneed in?

Both. Mount Duneed is divided between the City of Greater Geelong and Surf Coast Shire. The electrical rules are the same across Victoria, so the council makes no difference to how electrical work is done or certified.

Electrician Mount Duneed: do you cover both sides of the council boundary?

Yes. We work across all of Mount Duneed, on the Greater Geelong and Surf Coast Shire sides, and in Armstrong Creek, Waurn Ponds and Torquay next door.

My new home already has a safety switch. Why would I need more?

Each safety switch covers only the circuits wired through it. New circuits, such as a charger or outdoor power, get their own protection, which is why safety switch work appears in nearly half of our Mount Duneed jobs.

Can you add outdoor power points at a Mount Duneed home?

Yes. Outdoor power is one of our regular Mount Duneed jobs: single and double weatherproof power points for the yard, garage or patio, on a circuit with safety switch protection.

Can you mount a TV and run data cable in the same visit?

Usually, yes. TV wall mounting, data points and security cameras are all regular Mount Duneed requests, and doing them together saves a second visit.

Why has one downlight stopped working when the globe is fine?

Some fittings run at 12 volts through a driver, and when the driver fails the light goes out even though the globe is good. We replace the driver, or swap the fitting for a mains LED downlight.
