A burning smell at the switchboard: recent Lethbridge work
Our Lethbridge records include a recent fault-finding job where the power was tripping and there was a burning smell at the switchboard. Breakers and safety switches damaged by heat were found and replaced, then the circuits were tested and the work certified.
A hot-plastic smell at the board means something is overheating, possibly a loose connection or a device carrying more load than it should. Leave a switch that trips with that smell present off, rather than resetting it again and again. Our fault finding and repairs page shows how we trace a fault one circuit at a time.
If the power trips and something smells hot
These steps are safe for anyone in the house.
| What is happening | What to do |
|---|---|
| A switch has tripped, and nothing smells wrong | Switch off or unplug the appliances on that circuit, then try the switch one time. A second trip means it is time to call us. |
| A burning smell, buzzing or a scorched breaker | Do not reset anything or touch the board. Keep everyone away and call us. |
| Smoke or flames | Get everyone out and call 000. Never use water on it. Switch off at the main switch only if you can reach it safely. |
| The neighbours are out too | The fault is on the network, not in your house. Around Geelong and Golden Plains the distributor is Powercor, on 13 24 12; your bill names yours. |
| A tap, shower or appliance tingles when touched | Stay clear of it and keep others back. Ring Powercor straight away on 13 24 12, then book us to test the wiring. |

Heat-damaged breakers: new parts or a new board?
Once testing has found why the board overheated, there are two ways to fix it, and the Victorian rules treat them differently.
| The fix | Inspection | Certificate |
|---|---|---|
| Replacing a damaged circuit breaker or safety switch like for like, on a board that is otherwise sound | Non-prescribed work: no inspector has to attend | Yes, with your copy due within a month |
| Replacing the main switchboard | Prescribed work: an independent licensed inspector must pass it before the new board is powered up | Yes, issued once the inspection is done |
Any new board also has to put every final circuit behind a safety switch (RCD). The right fix depends on the board's age and how far the damage reached. See circuit breaker repairs and switchboard upgrades.

Lethbridge homes and the load they carry
Lethbridge is a rural township in Golden Plains Shire, on the Midland Highway and the railway line between Geelong and Ballarat. Proclaimed in 1854, it has grown since the 1970s through rural and residential subdivisions. The 2021 Census counted 1,181 people and 424 private dwellings, and separate houses made up 99.5 per cent of the occupied homes.
Most are family homes: households averaged 2.9 people, and only 9.0 per cent of occupied homes were rented. For the wiring, that means:
- Evenings test the board. Cooking, heating, washing and charging at once put the most load on it, and on any breaker or connection past its best.
- Age catches up. A house built in the 1970s or 1980s has passed 30, and at that point Energy Safe Victoria recommends that a licensed electrician inspect the wiring. Our electrical safety inspection does exactly that.
- Newer houses still need more: extra power points, outdoor lights and circuits the original plans did not allow for.
Electrician Lethbridge: other work for your home
Faults are only part of it. We also do the everyday work a Lethbridge house needs:
- extra power points inside, in the garage and outdoors, and power to a shed;
- LED lighting, outdoor and sensor lights, and ceiling and exhaust fans;
- smoke alarms, which last 10 years before they should be replaced, with hard-wired ones fitted only by a licensed electrician;
- electric hot water, ovens and cooktops, and TV wall mounting;
- EV chargers and surge protection at the switchboard;
- air conditioning installation.

Not sure what you need? Tell us what is happening and we will talk it through.
Booking an electrician from Lethbridge
Phone 1300 025 555, which is answered at all hours, or fill in our contact form. When you get in touch, mention:
- what tripped, what was running, and whether you noticed a smell, heat or buzzing;
- roughly how old the house is;
- if you can take one without touching anything, a photo of the open switchboard.
We test before we quote, and the repair starts only once you have approved the price. When the job is done, you are handed a Certificate of Electrical Safety.

Frequently asked questions
Electrician Lethbridge after hours: who answers the phone?
We do, on 1300 025 555, at any hour, and emergency call-outs cover Lethbridge 24/7. Smoke, flames or an injury mean 000 first, then us.
My switchboard smells like burning. What should I do?
Leave the board alone and do not reset anything. Keep people clear and ring an electrician now. If you see smoke or flame, get everyone out, call 000 and never use water on it.
Can heat-damaged breakers be replaced without a new switchboard?
They can, if testing shows the rest of the board is sound. Recent work in our Lethbridge records did just that: damaged breakers and safety switches were replaced, tested and certified. An old board or wide damage can make a new board the better fix.
Does replacing a breaker or safety switch need an inspector?
No. A like-for-like swap is non-prescribed work, so no inspector attends, though a Certificate of Electrical Safety is still issued. A new main switchboard is different: it is inspected before it is switched on.
What does a scorched or discoloured breaker mean?
It has been running hot. Do not touch it or keep resetting it. A licensed electrician needs to find out why, because a damaged breaker may no longer protect the cable it serves.
Can you add circuits to a Lethbridge family home?
Yes, where the switchboard has room for them. We check the board first. If it is full or old, the extra circuits usually come with a switchboard upgrade, which is inspected before it goes live.
Which council covers Lethbridge?
Golden Plains Shire. Lethbridge has the postcode 3332, and we cover it along with nearby Meredith, Bannockburn, Teesdale and Shelford.
Do you cover rural blocks around Lethbridge, not just the township?
Yes. The township and the rural properties around it get the same service, including 24/7 call-outs. For power to a shed or across a larger block, we check the switchboard and the cable route before we quote.
