Switchboards, surge protection and fault finding for Anakie homes, by CabledIN

Our recent electrician Anakie work includes a switchboard upgrade with surge protection, fault finding on a circuit that kept tripping, new and replaced power points and light fittings, and TV wall brackets. CabledIN holds Registered Electrical Contractor number REC 30925, brings more than 20 years' experience, and answers emergency calls in Anakie 24/7.

Fitting a TV bracket, a light or a power point normally takes one trip. Swapping the main switchboard takes more: the power stays off until an independent inspector has checked the new board. Either way, the price comes after we have seen what is involved.

Our recent electrical work in Anakie

Recent jobs in Anakie have included:

  • A switchboard upgrade with surge protection, signed off by an independent inspector and finished with a Certificate of Electrical Safety. See switchboard upgrades.
  • Fault finding on a tripping circuit that had left part of a house with no power at its power points.
  • Power points and light fittings, some added and some replaced, in the same house.
  • Wiring inside a wall moved and made safe during bathroom work.
  • TV wall brackets fitted for wall-mounted screens. See TV wall mounting.

Electrician Anakie: when some power points go dead

Fault finding in Anakie has included a circuit that kept tripping and cut the power to the power points in part of a house. If that happens, what you find at the switchboard decides who to call:

  • A safety switch is down. Pull out every plug on that circuit and try the switch once more. If it drops again, or refuses to stay up, the fault needs a licensed electrician. A current leak from a faulty appliance, power point or length of wiring can cause it, and tracing which one is the job. See fault finding and repairs.
  • Nothing has tripped, yet part of the house is off, or the lights flicker or dim. Energy Safe Victoria's advice here is to keep your hands off the switchboard and any metal fittings, switch off the power points you can get to safely, and phone your distributor without delay. Around Geelong the distributor is Powercor, which answers 13 24 12 at any hour; your bill confirms yours.

Switchboard upgrades and surge protection in Anakie

Surge protection went in as part of switchboard work in Anakie, and a new board is a good moment for it, with the enclosure open and every circuit being tested anyway. A main switchboard replacement runs like this:

  1. Check the old board and its backing. Black or dark brown panels, mostly fitted before 1990, can contain asbestos, and drilling or cutting one can release fibres.
  2. Give every final circuit safety switch (RCD) protection. That is required whenever a main switchboard is replaced.
  3. Add a surge diverter if you want one. It sends voltage spikes to earth before they reach your appliances. It is not a safety switch and does not protect people from a shock.
  4. Have it inspected. A new main switchboard is prescribed work, so we book an independent licensed electrical inspector, and the board stays off until the inspection is done.
  5. Keep the certificate. It follows the inspection, and the contractor only has to keep its copy for three years, so file yours with the house papers.

Anakie homes: a village and the farms around it

Anakie is a rural village north-west of Geelong, in the foothills of the Brisbane Ranges. Victorian Places records that grazing now predominates in the district, and the City of Greater Geelong describes homes scattered across blocks and acreages around a general store. The locality is split between the City of Greater Geelong and Golden Plains Shire.

The 2021 Census counted 734 people and 294 private dwellings across the Anakie locality. Almost every home is a separate house with its own switchboard, and on acreage anything away from the house needs its own cable run. Most are owner-occupied: about 43 per cent were owned outright and about 49 per cent with a mortgage, with only about 5 per cent rented.

Wiring in an older house deserves a look. Energy Safe Victoria recommends a check by a licensed electrician when a home turns 30, and before you move into one built before the 1980s.

Frequently asked questions

Electrician Anakie after hours: who do I call?

Phone 1300 025 555 whatever the hour; Anakie is inside our 24/7 emergency area. A fallen power line or an outage across the district goes to Powercor on 13 24 12, and anything that puts a life at risk is a 000 call.

Is Anakie in Greater Geelong or Golden Plains?

Both. The locality straddles the City of Greater Geelong and Golden Plains Shire. The boundary changes nothing about our service or the state's electrical rules.

Is surge protection worth adding when the switchboard is replaced?

It is a good time to consider it, with the board open and being tested anyway. A surge diverter reduces the spike that reaches your appliances, but it does not protect people, and no device can promise nothing will ever be damaged.

Why have some of my power points stopped working?

The likeliest cause is a tripped safety switch or circuit breaker. Unplug what runs on that circuit and try one reset; if it trips again, we can trace the fault. If nothing has tripped, or the lights flicker or dim, keep away from the switchboard and call your distributor.

Who signs off a new switchboard?

An independent licensed electrical inspector. Replacing a main switchboard is prescribed work, so we book the inspection, the board stays off until it is done, and you receive a Certificate of Electrical Safety afterwards.

Do you fit TV brackets in Anakie?

Yes. We mount the bracket, and a power point placed behind the screen keeps the plug and cord out of sight. It is usually one visit.

Can I look up an electrician's registration?

Ask to see their licence, as Energy Safe Victoria recommends, and look the contractor up on its public register. Ours is REC 30925, and registered contractors have to show that number on their advertising.

Are Staughton Vale and Moorabool in your area?

Yes. Staughton Vale is part of the Anakie district to the north and Moorabool lies to the south. Lara, Little River, Steiglitz and Sutherlands Creek each have a page of their own as well.
