Electrician Charlemont: what households ask us for
Our Charlemont records are about adding to homes rather than fixing old ones. The work that comes up:
- Extra power points, the most common request: double power points in rooms built with too few.
- TV wall mounting, with a bracket sized to the screen and the power behind it.
- Ceiling fans with a speed controller on the wall.
- Lighting, outdoor work and safety switch protection for new circuits.
- Repairs, including fault finding and after-hours hot water call-outs.
We also run wired power to a video doorbell or security cameras, including through masonry to the front door.

A young suburb in the Armstrong Creek growth area
Charlemont was gazetted as a suburb in February 2012, from mostly undeveloped land that had been part of Grovedale and Marshall. It sits in the Armstrong Creek growth area, which the council plans for about 22,000 homes across 2,500 hectares. Estates such as Charlemont Rise have gone in since, and the suburb grew from a few hundred residents in 2016 to 2,612 at the 2021 Census.
That Census paints a clear picture: 97.8 per cent of homes are separate houses, the median age is 29 against 38 for Victoria, and only 10.4 per cent of homes are owned outright.
New wiring is rarely the problem. The electrical plan for a new house is set before anyone lives in it, so households find the gaps later: one power point where three are needed, no power in the garage, bedrooms without fans, nowhere to hide TV cables.

TVs on the wall, fans and doorbells
A wall-mounted TV needs a bracket rated for the screen's size and weight, fixed into something solid, and a power point behind the screen so no cord hangs below it. Where the wall allows, the cables run inside it to a recessed plate. We agree the height with you before drilling.
Wired to a wall controller, a ceiling fan's speed is set at the switch rather than with a remote that wanders off. A video doorbell runs best on a wired low-voltage supply instead of a battery that needs recharging. On a brick front, the cable goes through masonry.
What affects the cost of adding power in Charlemont
- Distance and route. A power point beside an existing one is quicker than a run to the garage or the yard.
- Wall type. Plasterboard is quicker to work through than brick or masonry.
- Switchboard space. Every new circuit needs a slot on the board and its own combined circuit breaker and safety switch. A full board means a small sub-board or a larger main board.
- How much is done at once. Power points, a fan and a TV mount in one visit is one trip instead of three.
We quote after seeing the house, and you approve the price before work starts.
Hot water, faults and after-hours calls
Newer homes still have faults, from a failing appliance to water in an outdoor fitting. When a safety switch or circuit breaker trips, unplug what is on that circuit and try it again. Still off, or tripping again? Leave it off and call us.
If the electric hot water goes cold, look for a tripped switch on the board first, and never open the unit's cover. We have been called out after hours in Charlemont for hot water, and our 24/7 emergency call-outs cover the suburb. If the whole street is dark, Powercor (13 24 12) is the number to call instead.
Not sure what you need? Tell us what is happening and we will talk it through.
Smoke alarms and safety checks in newer homes
Charlemont's houses are recent, so nearly all fall under the rule for homes built after 1 August 1997: 240 V mains-powered smoke alarms with a backup battery. Those built after 1 May 2014 that need more than one alarm must have them interconnected, so one sounding sets them all off. Every alarm, wired or not, should be replaced every 10 years, so the original alarms in Charlemont's first houses are reaching that age. Replacing a hard-wired alarm is a job for a licensed electrician; see smoke alarm installation.
With 28.4 per cent of homes rented at the 2021 Census, owners and property managers also book electrical safety checks and smoke alarm checks with us. We arrange access with the household and send the report to whoever booked.

Frequently asked questions
Do you take small jobs in Charlemont, like one extra power point?
Yes. A single power point is a normal job for us. If you have a few small things in mind, such as a fan or a TV mount as well, book them together so it is one visit.
Electrician Charlemont: can you mount a TV and hide the cables?
Yes. We fix the bracket, fit a power point behind the screen and, where the wall allows, run the cables inside it so none show below the screen.
Can you add a ceiling fan to a bedroom in a new house?
Yes. The fan is fixed to the ceiling framing, wired to a switch or wall controller and tested. If there is no wiring at that spot yet, we run it there.
Can a video doorbell be wired so it never needs charging?
Yes, in most homes. We run a low-voltage supply to the doorbell, through brick or masonry where needed, so it does not rely on a battery.
My switchboard is full. Can I still add circuits?
Usually. A small sub-board fed from the main board can hold the new circuits, or the main board can be replaced with a larger one. A new main switchboard must be inspected by an independent inspector before the power goes back on.
Are the smoke alarms in my Charlemont home due to be replaced?
If they were fitted when the house was built and the house is now about 10 years old, yes. Smoke alarms should be replaced at 10 years, and a licensed electrician must swap the hard-wired ones.
Our hot water stopped working at night. Can you come out?
Yes. Check the switchboard for a tripped switch first. If it will not reset, call 1300 025 555: our 24/7 emergency call-outs cover Charlemont.
Can I get a power point in the garage or outside?
Yes. Outdoors we fit weatherproof power points and run any exposed cable in conduit. Garage power may come from a nearby circuit or a new one with its own safety switch protection.
Is Charlemont part of Grovedale or Armstrong Creek?
Neither. Charlemont has been its own suburb since February 2012, made from land that had been part of Grovedale and Marshall. It sits inside the Armstrong Creek growth area, with postcode 3217, in the City of Greater Geelong.
